Depending on your Toshiba model this may be an issue with the hypermodule. When it fails it will make the TV zig zag looking. One quick test is to see if your picture-in-picture window looks normal. If so the hypermodule is the issue. You can google Z1234TV to locate parts.

From the symptoms you describe this souncs like what toshiba describles as the "hypermodule" problem. These sets had a problem with a cuircit board known as the "hypermodule" Now in the past it was common to replace this cuircit board.. trouble was they began to run out of theml so toshiba figured out that the board could be repaired rather than replaced... TO repair such a board is quite labor intensivel it involves replacing 11 very small micro components call capacitors. I have replace them a few timesl First problem you have is removing this board take time and effort.. secound problem is these parts are very VERy small. and even the most skilled techninians need a magnifer and a very steay hand; It can be repaired but the time and skill required dramaticly add to labor cost .. it cost on average around 400 takeing several hours to complete... Well at our shop it cost that.. it varies.. my only advice is if you find someone make sure they have experience repairing the hypermodule. willtab.jpg
this is the module. it is in a metal sheild stang vertically on main board. the tiny circles are called capacitors to fix 11 need replaced...it is so easy to damage the board.... once damage ....no replacements

This sound familar. it sounds like the hypermodule problem. idealy the best way to repair this is the past was to replace the hypermodule. but they are hard to find. Next idea is to repair the board. the way to do this is too replace 11 micro capacitors. But soldering these can be difficult and labor intensive. if you get a tv shop to do this find a qualified tech. prices differ on average this repair should cost about 400.

51H84 is distorted when turning on. Takes a while to warm up then is clearer with dark shaded vertical bars. Is this repairable?

It shound like a typical problem with your Hypermodule. It will make the video distorted or ziz zag shapped in most cases. If you are a decent do it yourselfer you can get a rebuild kit from www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kit that includes all the parts and detailed step by step photo instructions.

Vertical Lines that occur for the first 5 min the tv is on

sounds like you have sa bad what is called the hypermodule. ideally the best coarse of action would be to replace this. but do to the fact it is a common problem these cuircit boards are hard to come by. Toshibia has told us service centers how to repair these boards which involves replaceing 11 micro caps very very small compnents that usally involve twezzers and magnifier. not for the do it yoursefer. you can easlly damage the board and if that happens that ends the tv right there. at my shope such a repair runs 250 with the parts and labor but it will depend on the shop it is rather labor intensive even to remove the board

Most Hyper modules are no longer available from Toshiba.
Hyper modules go bad due to problems in the power supply.
Which also needs attention.
We have developed a method of repairing the modules.
We are a Toshiba dealer in Milwaukee.
Note: What you read on the Internet is only a guess. You guess at you own expense and risk.
A dealer assumes that risk for you and provides a warranty.
