Does it have a built in mic

If it doesn't have a web cam then it wont have a built in mic. However you can buy cheap plug-in ones.

How do you turn on the internal mic

Many portable computers no longer include a built-in Condenser Microphone (Mic) in their standard specification, even if a Mic seems to be present (a small hole with an image of a microphone or "Mic" beside it normally sited on the upper part of the screen's plastic frame or occasionally on the Control Panel at the foot of the screen, often what seems to be the Mic is actually just a redundant, optional extra facility under which a MIc could be added by the manufacturer if the specification of the computer required one.

Since many computer-based activities that require Mics, such as Conference Calling, Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP - voice calls over the internet) Telephony, Gaming, Skype Internet calls (VOIP calls + Webcam), E-Mail Account Voice Calls, Voice Messaging, Karaoke, Music Recording, etc. also tend to require earphones/headphones as well as Mics, a consensus has built around a preference for dedicated headsets with combined Mic and Headphones functions.

To establish whether a built-in Condenser Mic is specified for and installed in this computer (assuming this computer runs a Windows Operating System):

Start -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Volume Control -> Options -> Properties -> scroll down through the audio-related device list to find "Mic" -> tick "Mic" -> OK -> untick "Mute" at the foot of the "Mic" Panel -> Close Volume Control -> Start -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Sound Recorder -> click the button with red dot on it to start recording sound via the built-in Condenser Mic -> Speak, clap or generate sounds near the computer -> if a Mic were installed the waveform in the center of the Sound Recorder box would modulate to reflect the sounds you are making -> if no sound registers during test recording, then check for a power up/mute Mic switch on the front or sides of the computer or on the Control Panel or by using a Function Key to toggles the Mic on and off (press and hold Fn + the relevant Audio Input/Mic Function [F+number] key), then repeat the above test recording procedure with another set of sounds.

If any of the devices, switches, Function keys or tools mentioned above is missing or inaccessible on this computer, then the probability is that no built-in Mic is specified for or installed on it.

In any event, in terms of convenience, ease of use, comfort, posture and both inbound and outbound sound quality, by far the best device for a Conference Call is a dedicated headset (see examples and a potential source below):

How do I get the mic to work on my laptop? I have skype and I can hear the conversation just fine. But when I want to use a mic to speak to my friends, I keep getting something about my sound card. What do...

Hi bob_durek assuming you have the same problem with MSN messenger or any other software, please go to start -control panel- Sound. Then click on the voice tab and Audio tab and see under Voice Recording you see a device, meaning your mic. If you do see a device, click on Volume and make sure the "Select" is checked. Restart Skype and run the audio wizard to make sure everything is working. Dont forget to rate if my answer helped you. Thank you :D

Mic doesn't work on Dell Inspiron 1150. Have tried all I know. Help, please.

The mic is also connected to the audio device installed on your computer, so what we can do here first to correct the problem is to uninstall and then reinstall the audio drive of your computer. To do that Right click Mucomputer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device manager and then look for audio , game controller and then look for your audio device then right click it and select uninstall , then once done restart the computer and check if the mic is working. Nut if still not working better use a head phone because there's a chance that the mic is bad.

Audio compression and windows vista

Does that message appear also when you're on a private voice conference? If it is, try to update your copy of yahoo messenger. If that doesn't solve the problem, try re-installing the driver for your soundcard.

Hope this helps.

Sound problem

Is your problem happening only when you use skype messenger? Check if your mic is on mute by double clicking the speaker icon on the taskbar beside the date&time. Check also if there is a driver installed for the audio mic and sound to work by right clicking on My Computer then go to Properties, on the System Properties window click on Hardware tab then click Device Manager. Look if the speaker icon -- the Sound, video and game controllers-- has a Critical icon(a yellow triangle with an exclamation point inside). If there is a Critical Icon then there is a missing driver for your sound. Fix this by installing the driver or just check first if your mic is on mute. Otherwise your mic is busted.

Audio compression

if you wish to have audio file compressed you will need a wav file or cda(music cd) to mp3 converter, if you search the net there are plenty of free or shareware programes
