Try checking for assignment mismatch...make sure that there are no sources assigned. try pressing and holding the display button to check the signal received and transmitted.

I have the same problem. It only occurs with my HD DVR (HDMI cable), not my blue ray (HDMI cable), or my xbox and wii (component video). Video and audio cutout is random and drives the family nuts. I am desperate for a solution.
easiest fix is to take all hdmi straight to tv. then come out of tv with optical cable to your receiver. that way what ever your watching will automatically be sent to the receiver thru optical. you even will get dolby dig. also you can have audio from your tv when you dont want to use your surround. keeps receiver on one input also.
Not sure if this is your fix, but I had what I thought was the same problem. I played with my Onkyo quite a bit ensuring the correct assignments for HDMI, audio and all that stuff. Turns out I neglected to make sure the output devices were properly assigned. Many devices aren't default to output sound over HDMI. I changed the audio out settings on the cable box to HDMI and suddenly the Onkyo worked great. I know, I'm an idiot for not checking that in the first place, but maybe someone out there is having the same trouble as well.
Unfortunately only the higher end Onkyo Reciever pass audio over HDMI for sound. 605,705,805,905 exc. Your reciever will carry Video over HDMI but you will need a digital optical cable for sound.
try using a HDMI cable connecting the receiver from the "out" to the tv, then allocate through the setup menu what you have connected, say a cable box by hdmi, you would go to cable/sat allocate the port "hdmi1 or coax 1" then return. If it is a dvd click on dvd then allocate eg: "hdmi 2" then return.
Are your DVD and cable actually going to the Onkyo first and then to the TV? I am assuming it is, if you listen to the Onkyo when watching a DVD or cable.
The Onkyo receiver you have has 2 hdmi inputs and 1 hdmi output.
Does your Xbox360 have an hdmi output and that is what you want to connect to the Onkyo? Some do and some don't.
If your Xbox has a hdmi output and you are already using the 2 hdmi inputs on the Onkyo, you can not connect the Xbox using the hdmi, you have no more hdmi to connect to, so you must go thru one of the other inputs of the Onkyo.
The hdmi has the video and audio together, the other video options do not. you would need to run seperate audio cables as well. Your Xbox should have a composite video (yellow RCA jack) output or a component video (1 red, 1 blue, 1 green RCA jack) output.
When you connect the Xbox thru, lets say the composite video of the Onkyo , you will also need to connect the audio from the Xbox to the Onkyo on the same input. It should be right next to the yellow RCA jack or right under it. They are 2 RCA jacks, one red and one white.
You will then need to connect the composite output of the Onkyo to the composite input of the TV.
When connecting like this, you will also need to select the composite input on your TV with your remote for your TV. Your TV should have an input button that lets you go thru all the different inputs to it.
you can also use the component video from the Xbox if it has that. But you must also run the audio to the Onkyo as well to the corresponding audio inputs of the component video input on the Onkyo.
This may sound a little confusing, but remember that the hdmi has the audio and video in one cable, the other video options do not, so you must run additional cables for the audio to the Onkyo from the Xbox.
Also remember whichever video you use from the Xbox to the Onkyo, you must also run that same video from the Onkyo to the TV and then switch the TV over to that input when you want to watch the Xbox on the TV
My configuration: ZONE 1 (living room) DishNetwork Dual Tuner DVR Tuner 1 [S-Video out] -> [S-Video in] ONKYO TX-SR875 [HDMI out] -> [HDMI in] Sony KDS-60A3000 rear projection TV
ZONE 2 (living room) DishNetwork Dual Tuner DVR Tuner 2 [Composite Video out] -> [Composite Video in] ONKYO TX-SR875 [Composite Video out] -> [Composite Video in] Samsung AQUOS LCD TV
Problem: ONKYO receiver stops sending video signal to my ZONE 1 Sony TV through the HDMI connection. ZONE 2 may still receive video. (NOTE: the issue might be related to the upconverter circuitry?)
Symptom: I couldn't see any video, but I could hear the Tuner 1 audio through my ONKYO. An important clue is that I couldn't see ONKYO's on-screen display menu on my TV when hitting the [Setup] button on my remote. But, I could see my TV's Sony-based menus and display options.
Solution: 1. Put all ZONES in Standby mode using the remote. Hit these buttons on remote: [Receiver], then [Standby]. [Receiver], [ZONE2], then [Standby], [Receiver], [ZONE3], then [Standby]. You should NOT see any lights on the ONKYO except maybe one red led near the power button. 2. Pull the power plug out of the back of the ONKYO, and leave unplugged for 20-30 seconds. Turning off any power center it is connected to isn't enough. You MUST unplug the power from the back of the ONKYO for 20-30 seconds. 3. Reconnect the power cord to the ONKYO. 4. Using the remote, set ZONE1 to a video source known to be working. If you don't see video, try leaving the power cord off for a longer period.
I know it sounds too simple to work, but that's what brought the video back for me the few times the video stopped displaying. Hope it works for you.
