Usually thats a sighn of a bad thermocouple, thats the copper tube that goes from the gas valve to the actual pilot assembly it senses that the pilot is burning and allows the main burner to light. If there is no pilot lit the bur will not light. Its there to keep you home from exploding from a release of gas with no pilot. The good thing is that most ofthem are universal and most water heaters use the same one. And you can buy one for a water heater at lowes or home depot for about ten bucks. If you get one thats longer than the origional thats ok because you can just coil it in a circle just be carefull and dont kink the tube,if you do kink it you must get another one. even if you straighten it.
It wont work. Hope that gets you going and warm.

My fireplace doesn't light right away, then it shuts off after a few minutes.

sounds to me like your thermocouple is loose just go to where it connects to the gas valve and tighten it most times this happens after it has been replaced, because temperature changes loosen them also make sure the pilot flame is directly on the thermocouple , sometimes dust gets in to the pilot and changes direction of the flame making it "grade the thermocouple, with the main burner on the air flow sometimes "moves the flame and the thermocouple thinks it went out and shuts down the main burner. extinguish the pilot, either blow it out with canned air, or use a q tip to reach down and dust it out then re light. should be good

My furnace keeps making an explosion when it ignites

The amount of gas buildup is too great. Make sure the burner ports are clear right next to the pilot light area. - run a small wire into the holes to make sure they are clear then make sure the pilot light is burning into the area next to the burner. A bit of whoosh is to be expected but if it becomes too great it will blow the pilot light out. Sears wall furnaces are prone to this the burners have to be kept clean

Heat exchanger

If the fan coming on blows out the pilot light it is a pretty good indication that the heat exchanger is cracked. You should not continue to use the heater. I recommend contacting a qualified service technician to check it out and confirm that it is a cracked heat exchanger. Hope this helps

Vulcan Quasar wall furnace, pilot will lit and burner starts but goes out after a few minutes. sometimes pilot will relight but most often fails to light till unit cools down. Any suggestions?

You may need a new thermocouple if you have been able to light it before. It is located above the pilot lite and needs to get hot to keep the gas flowing. You can pick up a universal thermocouple a the local hard ware store.Shut the gas off, unscrew the coupling nut and remove the old one.Bend the the new one like the old one and replace.Try not to kink the new one.Good luck and thanks for choosing FixYa.com.

When main burner comes on 20 secs later pilot gos out gas valve then shuts down

Remove the burner tray, Clean pilot orifice, make sure it is screwed in and in the right position, and replace the thermocouple. This should cost about $50-$75 and can be done by anybody.
The gas line will probably have to be undone temporarily to remove the burner tray. If it was installed correctly there will be a union on the gas line and this shouldnt take more than an hour once you have the new thermocouple.

What could be wrong with ruud farnace 80% when the burners slow down and start making noise like is not gas pression and the pilot shut off.

I would first concentrate on the pilot flame, and thermocouple. Make sure pilot flame is good and strong , and thermocouple end above flame is cleaned well. If flame appears proper, sometimes a good rub down on thermocouple end with fine steel wool will do the trick. The thermocouple senses the heat from the pilot and thus signals gas valve that it's ok to send gas for operation. If debris collects on that thermocouple and it doesn't sense proper heat from pilot flame, it will not signal gas valve to open.

MY ruud silhouette gas furnice unit comes on but burners don"t.can't see pilot light.the unit has electic ignitor

You either have a spark ingitor or you have a glow coil ignitor. The glow coil ignitor is located on the left hand side of the burners. It is a very fragile part.

If you have a mirror or have good eyes, look to see if
it has a crack in it.

Cant find set screw on pilot burner. model no. rmi 70ng dyna-glo wall gas heater.

Set screw for what? To raise the flame? Not one. What you gotta do is clean out the pilot. Least bit of dust makes the safety think oxygen is low and shuts down the heater. I flush the pilot with a drop of rust busted then I use the long spout on it to blow out the pilot. You could use a straw tubing or shop air. Take a look at the demo HERE
A great page that shows where to clean the pilot and has links to more good stuff: HERE

Blower works but no heat

If in fact you have the above listed furnace, you do not have a pilot but electronic ignition. You will need to remove the front cover on the furnace, tape down the door safety switch and then have someone help you by turning up your thermostat to a very high setting. Watch and listen inside the furnace. There should be some blinking going on at the control board followed by a small blower fan starting up. Then after 10-15 seconds there should be a click followed by an orange glow viewed thru the viewing window to the burner section. In a few seconds the gas valve should click and the burners will ignite. There is a safety switch that will sense flame and then keep the gas going to the burners. If it does not sense it, it will shut it off within 10 seconds. If all is well so far, your blower will turn on in about 90 seconds after flame. There is a diagnostic code chart on the back side of the access door if you get an error code (blinking) on the control board.

Always check little things like air filter, condensate drain and broken or loose wires.
