Question about Dell Inspiron 1721 Notebook
Do you need to restore your Dell laptop computer to it's Factory Settings? What if you press F8, select "Repair Your Computer" and it doesn't work or your computer simply reboots?? Here's what worked for me.
1) Download Hiren's Boot Cd (IT'S FREE) (hirensbootcd.org/download).
2) Burn the downloaded iso file to a blank DVD.
3) Bootup your laptop using the Hiren's boot cd/dvd.
4) From Hiren's boot cd menu select "Mini Windows XP".
5) From Mini Windows XP select "Command prompt".
6) In the command prompt window, type "d:" and press enter.
7) Still in the command prompt window, type "cd\tools" and press enter.
8) Finally, type "imagex /apply d:\dell\image\factory.wim 1 c:\" and press enter.
9) WARNING when you press enter you will completely wipe your c drive.
10) When complete, reboot your computer, should come up with factory settings.

When its a computer that is using the windows XP you wont have that option .. Its a different option to restore to the factory settings
Use the following things
Dell has a default partition on the computer and you can install with the same..
If you have windows vista on the computer then tap F8 when the computer turns on and then you will be able to see the advanced boot options.. Select repair my computer.. In the repair my computer screen select the dell factory image restore...
Your computer will go through the installation and it will be up and running...
If you have windows Xp then you have to turn on the computer and when the dell logo appears you have to simultaneously press control and the F11key.. You will be able to reinstall the OS in this way..
If you are not able to get into this option then there might be no restore partition availlable
In that case you have to reinstall using the disc

SOURCE: have a Dell mini 10
have you tried at bootup
power on at same time press ctrl+F11 this may do it for you
Do you have to take it back to factory settings because you will loose everything that you have
put on the laptop unless you back it up to pendrive or spare drive
have you considered a system restore instead
if you go to
click on it
then choose a restore point back to when you think your laptop was ok
please let us know how you got on
thankyou for using fixya
