Check Device Manager in Safe Mode. Look for hidden devices under view and delete all DVD's. Windows should auto install after reboot. Run thorough virus scan and rec-connect drive if still does not function.

dvd burners or rom drive have 2 lens inside, one for DVD read, the other for cd read. I see it often where one fails out in the drive but the other works. With one working fine and the other not, I would replace the drive. If still under warranty send it to manufacturer. If not do a search on Ebay for a replacement drive, or get a local laptop repair shop to do it for you.

SOURCE: my laptop not use a pirated or copy dvd

While it's not legal to download, and burn DVD's illegally, if your rom has issues reading burned DVD / CD data, your drive may be faulty, or just needs to be blown out. Use a can of compressed air available from most office supply stores and blow any dust or debris out of the drive. Be careful not to touch the Lense, they are quite delacate.

If your drive still fails to read burned media, but does fine with normal media, the drive may not be able to read burned media at all, and you will need to replace it to do so.

SOURCE: The DVD ROM drive only plays CD's

You may not have DVD playing software installed or compiled correctly. The easiest was around this is go to Filehippo.com, download and install VLC media player.

Its an excellent media tool and free.

Before you've remove the dvd rom try to check also the connector cable of the dvd rom. Try to use another cable if you have. maybe the defect is the cable. Just try to use another cable.
