The solution...
the xp audio driver file that the gateway site gives you for the laptop mx6437 (D00377-002-001.exe) does not work for some reason. I searched the site for "conexant ac link audio driver" and found what looks to be a updated second working version. (D00377-002-002.exe)

here is a link to the page:

(D00377-002-002.exe)

hope it helps

Hi! Welcome to Fixya! Try this, find your utility CD, actually its a package of your laptop, then, reinstall the audio driver. just follow onscreen instruction. after that you need to restart. AFTER booting, go to control panel, click sound and then configure the audio, same thing just follow onscreen instructions. thats it! have a nice day!
if in case it has no more utility CD try this website  www.driver.com and find the appropriate driver that suits the audio device of your laptop, if it hasn't any try (REALTEK audio driver)

Can this laptop be upgraded to Win 7

Your computer manufacturer does not have supported drivers for windows 7 on their site, so upgrading your computer will be a risk as it may not function effectively.

Gateway laptop mx6437 turns on but won't boot

Hi,

It migt be resolved by a power drain. Disconnect the AC adapter, takeout the battery, and press the power button for 30 secs. Put everything back again and try to turn it on.

If your Noterbook is still not turning on, then you might need a phillips screwdriver, or if its in warranty you might want to take it to Gateway technicians, as opening the notebook by urself might void the warranty.

** Before trying the steps below, disconnect the AC adapter and take out the battery.

Turn your notebook upside down, and look for bays, look for screws which has a rectangular comb like structure next to it, unscrew it and you will find RAM chips in there take it out and put it back in. Do this for all the chips you have in the notebook.

Put everything back again and your Notebook might be up and running, else there might be some hardware issues and you need to go to gateway or some local tech.

Regards,
Shrey

I pop my system restore cd in the computer, restart, but no options are shown as far as following istructions. It just shows a regular screen. How can I restore my system software?

You need to go into the BIOS setup screen and change the boot order so that the CD-ROM is the first boot device. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with gateway machines so I don't know the keystrokes to do it. However, everything I read about Gateway computers shows that it's the F1 or F2 key.
