This compressor has a bleed valve under the tank. It is used to drain pressure. It may be cracked open.

SOURCE: I have a C2006 Type

first you have a reciprocating pump and the hissing you ear probably comes from the unloading valve on the pressure switch(it will look like a bike tire valve)if there is air coming out the valve when the compressor is off it probably means you have a bad check valve. This valve is use to unload the pressure inside the pump for an easy start .a motor always drive more amps on start up if you cant unload this pressure you will trip the overload(you probably have a reset button on your motor)check the specs on your pressure relief valve ,its a small pump maybe its just adjusted to high.in this case your pressure relief valve will open .If the pressure is fine and there is air coming out the relief valve then you have to replace it!to adjust your pressure turn the screw on your pressure switch clockwise to increase and counterclockwise to decrease .usually you have a 30 psi between cut-in and cut-off called the pressure differential. It can be adjusted on some pressure switch.be sure you put some teflon tape on the treads if you replace something to avoid air leaks.hopes this help!

SOURCE: My four-year old PC pancake compressor starts fine

First take off the head on the air pump and check the reed valves on the valve plate. If they got hot and warped or cracked they'll work to a point then no more pressure can be built up. Next check the pistion ring and cylinder wall. If either is damaged you'll only get so much pressure build-up then it will leak past the piston.

I have the same unit and had the same problem Its a good little mechine but the problem is the houseings for the gauges when you are loading the mechine can get hit and move up and this will bend the neddle on the gauge and make it hang up . You can carefuly remove the lense with a small screwdriver it just snaps on and off then gentaly bend the neddle pointer backand snap the lense cover back on and it should work again . Just be carefuly when you transport the mechine not to let the base of the gauges touch anything

Compressor runs fills tank but then it wont keep the pressure, won't restart to keep pressure above requested pressure. I have to let it seat for 1/2 hour to restart again

Most likely problem is the tank fill check valve. The most common way a a tank will loose pressure is by leak-back at the check valve. This also makes it hard to start because it leaves the tank pressure on the pump head instead of letting it bleed off. The motor will only restart after the tank pressure is bleed off to a low level, reducing the back pressure the motor will have to overcome. Leaking can be heard at the pressure switch, where the air is normally bleeds off over 10 seconds or so after the motor turns off. A defective check valve will continuously leak down at the pressure switch unloader valve instead of bleeding out in just 10 seconds. The check valve is an assembly that is largely hidden inside the tank. It just looks like a large hex nut where the filler tube from the pump enters the tank. Removal usually means first removing a smaller hex/barb/connector where the smaller relief line ties into the big nut. Inspection of the check valve will easily reveal whether this is the problem.

Compressor runs but the air bleeds out think it might be stuck reed

If your compressor reaches the cut-out pressure (or very close) , most likely not reed valves. Usually air leaking when compressor is shut off is result of leaking check valve at the tank. Look for brass valve and remove. Somtimes the valve is repairable if debris is keeping valve open. Clean or replace as needed.

After the tank is brought up to pressure, I try to set the outlet pressure using the pressure regulator valve. Doesnt work-- the valve bleeds all the air out of the tank. How do I fix this?

Hi shmclean813...

Sometimes the pressure regulators get stuck, try to tap the regulator with a hammer lightly when the air is leaking out to try and reseat the valve.
See if that will stop the air from draining out of your tank, if not then you will need to replace the air regulator as it is faulty.

There is a small valve on the pressure switch that should relieve the pressure between the compressor and tank check valve. Make sure when pressure switch trips, it engages the relief valve and it bleeds the air out. Sometimes the valve itself comes loose and is not engaged by the lever in the pressure switch.

Compressor stops then leaks down to low setting

That little copper line is an unloading line, to bleed compressed air out of the compressor head so that the motor can more easily start the compressor. Pressor switch should be threadded into top of air tank, and the unloading valve is built into the side of the switch. When the tank reaches the high pressure setting the switch disconnects power to the motor and opens the unloading valve at the same time. The unloading valve should be connected to the compressor discharge line through a check valve with an unloading valve port upstream of the check valve. These valves are usually threaded into the top of the air tank as well. Sounds to me like your valve was leaking and someone bypassed it.

Air compressor fills, but slows down as the pressure builds

sounds like you need a new check valve which should be somewhere between the compressor outlet piping, tubing, etc and the tank which prevents the air in tank to back feed to the compressor which would cause hard starting and could damage the motor easy way to check is when you shut off the compressor with some air in the tank if the check valve is bad it would continue to bleed air out out the unloader valve .the unloader valve on your unit is most likely part of the pressure switch when the unit shuts of it should only bleed down the pressure in the pump so it would make it easy to start when needed hope i didn't confuse you

I have worked on many makita compressors and have run-across this problem on a few of them. Your compressor has a check valve that is supposed to hold tank pressure after the switch reaches set pressure. There is an unloader valve built into the pressure switch that releases the pressure in the discharge hose after the unit shuts off. The unloader allows the compressor to restart with-out any pressure in the discharge line. If the brass check valve is leaking pressure back into the system, air will leak out of the unloader valve. Follow the discharge line to the tank and you will see the brass check valve. To test valve for fault, run the compressor till it builds around 80 psi and unplug the unit from the wall outlet. Remove the 1/4" hose connector from the check valve and check for air leaking out of the valve. If it is leaking you can order form www.toolpartsdirect.com. or call the makita 1-800 number. The price is about the same. Good Luck on your repair.

Air leak after reaching 150 psi & shutting off

Everything I read in the owners manual suggest you take unit in for a trained service tech to repair. It could possibly be a few things causing this but from what I can see there are not that many replaceable repairable parts for this. Good luck
