Question about Royal Scrittore Manual Typewriter

1 Answer

The ribbon on my Royal Scrittore seems to be too close to the paper bale resulting in the letters smudging and red rubbing off on the paper when typing black letters. Why would this happen. The typewriter is new.

Most likely the ribbon isn't threaded properly thru the guides.

Margin Release should be near the top of the keyboard on the left or ride side of the keyboard. You may have a sticky margin lock bail or a spring loose or broken on the bail mechanism if the margin release doesn't work. Sometimes the linkage for the bail needs to be adjusted. If you are mechanically inclined, you can possibly follow it through, but if not, seek out a service tech.

Does the carriage move if you depress the tab key or space bar? Is there any pull on the draw band. Maybe the main spring is broken.

The only thing I can think of is the ribbon is not threaded properly. (ex. in front of carrier instead of behind or vice versa)

Ribbon will not move up so key can strike it

You may be in stencil mode. There is usually a lever that you move to red, black or white.

Black ribbon is not back feeding same amount/speed as label, leaving black smudge at beginning of label

This is due to the quality of the ribbon.
When the paper moves back, since the head is not raised, the paper rubs on the ribbon en is the cause of the black smudge. Use correct Ribbon

Too much toner on paper which then smudges

Try reducing the print resolution using the menu buttons. Does it smudge with coloured prints? If so then the fuser unit is faulty. If it is only black that smudges it is likely to be the K Developer unit. Ensure that you are using genuine toners, not refills or third party as the quality of toner can cause similar results.

Letters do not form on paper

Seems like the ribbon may be cought in the printwheel of in front of it. Release the printwheel, make sure nothing is caught, and resnap it closed. Make sure the prinwheel rotates when it is first turned on or the proper character will not be struck.
