Question about Averatec PC Laptops

1 Answer

Keyboard Issues/Errors I am having keyboard issues on my Averatec 5400; When I type certain letters/numbers {c, f, j, l, n, x, z, 9} they are immediately followed by the period symbol; and the o is replaced by a . completely. Also, pressing the left arrow key results in a series of periods... I have tried several of the suggestions found here to no avail {Fn & Num Lock; Fn & PrtScr; Fn & Pause}.... Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

It is set to the English (USA) setting; should have mentioned I'd tried that....

Also, as mentioned in my original post, I tried the Fn & Nam Lock and the same time and nothing changed....

As for the stuck idea, it is a personal laptop used only at home... No office supplies get that close to it... Even if something were hypothetically stuck, the o and the . aren't adjacent and shouldn't trigger each other... the . is only showing up after certain letters/numbers/actions... I have popped the . off and there is nothing under that particular key...

I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the keyboard driver just in case.... It was working fine until my daughter used it and pressed a few buttons as she tried to get up with it on her lap... She has no idea what was pressed, so I am certain it's not a hardware issue...

I would gather that your keyboard has been changed somehow to another country keyboard. Please check in your control panel, keyboard and see if eng usa is selected.

The other suggestion is pressing and holding fn key, num lock key at the same time. You should see a light going off and on when you do this on your system.

If keyboard selected is english, and num lock is off, I would turn your keyboard upside down and give it a good shake. Sometimes a paperclip, or staple gets underneath the keys.

Keyboard incorrectly types a mixture of letters and numbers when certain keys are used.

There are a couple of things you could try:
1. Remove the keyboard following a service manual for your laptop, and reseat the ribbon cable underneath it.
2. If the problem still isn't solved, the keyboard should be replaced

Keyboard typing multiple letters/ numbers when pressing certain keys.

Keyboards on Windows computers can repeat letters when key press sensitivity is too high. This problem can be rectified by adjusting your keyboard's repeat frequency. Once this is lowered, key presses will occur slower and you will not have the letters repeated instantly.

Click"Start," then "Control Panel." Click "Hardware and Sound," followed by "Keyboard." Move the "Repeat delay" slider further to the left below the "Character repeat" option. The further left the slider moves, the longer the delay will be before a character repeats.

Number and letter keys are stuck (type) together

This model has no numlock as it has no keypad. It looks like a faulty keyboard as the linked keys appear to be in the same column in the keyboard grid. You could try Fn+F11 as this solves certain other keyboard problems with symbols etc. Otherwise could be a new keyboard required.

Different letters appear when typing a certain letter for example when typing letter s letter w will also appear

Hi,

I see that when typing in on the keyboard some letters appear as well like for "s' the letter "w" shows up as well.

Was there any liquid spilled on the keyboard? if none then you can try cleaning OFF any unwanted software on you computer, then perform a disk defragmentation on the machine just to have everything in proper order for the windows side.

After doing what was said above restart the computer and try the keyboard again if still the issue is the same, i suggest that you back up any personal stuff like pictures and emails if ever because reformatting the Hard drive and windows back to factory defaults will be next to see if the issue will still be the same after reinstalling windows back to defaults.

If the issue is still the same after reinstalling windows then this is going to be considered a hardware failure to the keyboard and replacing the keyboard will be the next best thing to be done.

Unless Liquid was the cause then the issue may differ if the motherboard was the one causing the letters to type in with other letters which is not common.

Certain keys such as the "N" key and some others

Yes, a can of compressed air may solve it. Usually for me I need to remove the trouble keys and soak them in soapy water, dry them, and put them back on the keyboard. Be careful when popping them off as you can break them and have to order a new keyboard.
Please leave good feedback! :) Thank you!

Hp pavilion dv1000 laptop pc keyboard not working properly.

Does this computer KB work alright in SAFE mode? If it does then drivers and/or viruses are the problem. If it doesn't work in SAFE mode then it could be drivers and or keyboard. Now try booting into BIOS. At the date prompt you usually can type any keyboard letter. If the keyboard works here, then you definately have driver/virus issues. If not replace the keyboard.
