Question about Dell Latitude D505 Notebook

Keyboard variance I received a Dell Latitude D505 from a friend in Switzerland. The keyboard configuration differs from the set up used in South Africa. How can I resolve this. It includes both the physical setup of the keyboard as well as the electronic side.

Starts up until welcome screen, then goes black

Hi there,

Try Last Known Good Configuration. From shutdown turn the computer on and as soon as you see the DELL logo start tapping F8. Advance Boot Options will appear and then use the up or down arrow keys to go to Last Known Good Configuration and press Enter.

If that does not work:

Try booting to safe mode. After powering the computer up when you see the DELL logo start tapping F8 from your keyboard and then choose "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode with Networking" if you're able to boot up successfully go to Start-> All Programs-> Accessories-> System Tools and then System Restore.
Restore your computer to a date when it was working.

Hope you found this helpful!

How do you reset the latitude d505 to factory settings

How to reset the latitude d505 to factory settings:

If you have Windows XP,

Step 1: Backup everything that is important to you.
Step 2: Boot your computer using the Windows installable CD.
Step 3: Format your harddisk or repartition it.
Step 4: Install Windows XP using the installable CD.

Don't try this if you are not sure of what you are doing. It won't damage your laptop, but you might require a long time to get your laptop working again.

I can get to f8 menu page but when you pick safe mode it will start but freeze up i need to do a system recovery on it however just starting windows normally it will come on with logo but black after that...

Yes you will have to do a complete restore. Run your "Built In" system recovery software. I think this is accessed by pressing CTRL+ F11 twice only.
when dell screen comes up on keyboard hit CTRL+ F11 twice only then you will see Dell pc restore by Symantec.Hit on restore and hit on I agree and select the option Restore the pc to dell factory settings and then it will restore the pc.

Number pad

You can't make the alternate characters like °, ®, ♂, σ etc with a combination number pad. You need to have a seperate number pad. I use a $20 plug in keyboard.

B key on my Dell Latitude popped off

Generally, once a key pops off a portable keyboard the keyboard needs to be replaced. It is pretty simple to replace and not too expensive.

Here is an example of a replacement on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-KEYBOARD-DELL-8500-500M-Latitude-D505-D600-D800_W0QQitemZ250338315590QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCA_Mice_Trackballs?hash=item250338315590&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

To replace the keyboard, just remove the hinge cover, take out the screws for the keyboard and lift the keyboard to release the cable connector.
