Some times a battery can pickup a dead short, and even though it shows a charge it will not work. The other possibilty is the power management chip on the mother board. This chip allows the computer to charge the battery and switch from battery to AC. (Right now I have a Thinkpad that will only run on battery, bad PM chip) Try replacing the battery first, if that doesn't work, then unfortunately the motherboard will have to be replaced.

If the laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, until they won't charge up at all. A new replacement battery will fix this problem.
