Question about Routers

1 Answer

Netgear router only allows me to get to Google domains?????

A new apartment we just moved into for temporary housing has a Comcast connection with a netgear router.  Google.com works fine, but anything else fails. All the other data connections work wirelessly, but the browser can resolve or load anything.  Typing the IP address doesn't work either. Ping works but nslookup returns: default server unknown.
DNS? PTR record? Not sure how to fix any of that in Vista.
Thanks for any help!

At least once a day I have to re boot my router so my wireless gear can pick up the signal. Why?l

After checking ALL cables and reseating connections, checking for bent pins, Contact Comcast have them analyze the signal. And have a Comcast Tech come out and trace the signal through the house. It may be outside. I had a similar issue, the problem was outside, a underground box had been run over by a big lawn mower damaging the box allowing water to enter.

Is netgear compatible with comcast broadband service

Yes the NetGear router is compatible with Comcast. You'll just connect the one 'computer' output from the Comcast box into the WAN input on the NetGear box, and in the outputs from the Router plug it from there to your computer.

I'm trying to connect a netgear wpn 824 to a comcast router with windows 7

You are trying to set up the wireless router with the comcast modem, right ?
You can set up the router manually , without the disc.
Make sure that your computer is able to go online when connected to the comcast modem only.
If you have the router working already then you just need to add a computer to the network.

Wireless router connection problems

That is very possible. I would reset the router by reset switch on back. Also both routers will tend to build up a static charge loosing the connection. You can unplug it for 10 seconds and replug in.

I would also try setting up new home network using automatic settings.

Re-Connectivity to Comcast Modem

All you need to do is "MAC ADDRESS CLONING". Access the router's setup page and look for MAC Clone settings. Enable that and clone the mac address of your main PC. After that, perform a power cycle. Turn off the router then the modem. Wait for 30 seconds then power on the modem first, wait for all the lights to go solid then power on the router. That should do it.

In Italy, have Netgear router, can only get google

The first thing to do is ensure they haven't been blocked in the router. To do this, log into your router and click Block Sites on the left hand side. If they are not displayed there, make sure it's not a DNS issue. To do this, log into your router and click Basic Settings. The change your DNS servers, to the OpenDNS servers; 1. Locate "Domain Name Server (DNS) Address " 2. Change the setting to "Use These DNS Servers" Primary: 208.67.222.222 Secondary: 208.67.220.220 3. Click Apply, and re-boot your router IMPORTANT: If your router is already set to "Use These DNS Servers", make sure to make a note of the IP's already in there, just incase you want to switch back, or the OpenDNS servers do not work (unlikely but possible). Once re-booted, try accessing the previously blocked websites. If you find they are still unavailable, check they aren't blocked directly on your computer (e.g. via a firewall or other security product). To do this, click Start > Run and type: CMD At the prompt, enter the following and press return (do this for each line below); nslookup {BLOCKED_DOMAIN} >> nslookup.txt tracert {BLOCKED_DOMAIN} >> tracert.txt Where {BLOCKED_DOMAIN} is one of the domains you cannot access. nslookup will provide the website's current IP for you. Aslong as this is NOT an internal IP (169.*, 172.*, 192.*, 10.*), it is resolving correctly. Tracert will allow a trace connection from your computer, to the affected websites. Lines you do not want, will contain a *.
