Either it is not enabled in your BIOS or you dont have the chipset drivers installed .

Reboot , hit F1 , go into settings for APM and verify it is enabled.

In it is enabled in BIOS and not selectable in windows , renistall the chipset drivers. Go to this link , select your OS , download and install.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=3375954&lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3375952&taskId=135

Should be enabled. If not check device manager for any ! symbols.

Insert your restore CD if errors are found and not fixed by the checkdisk function listed above. Turn your computer off and then back on. You'll beasked to hit any button to boot from your CD; press any key. You will then beasked if you want to install a fresh version of your OS or "Repair" acurrent copy. Choose the "Repair" option.

Recently a put windows 7 on my latitude d610 only problems I had were incompat. Drivers (wifi, sound, graphics.) all were fixed with googling those drivers with windows 7 because this hardware is not compatible with 7 but seeing as it is a restart thing,

Check the drivers u have installed try to see if any need updating or are no compat.

My lap win 7 shutting down after auto restarting

First thing you need to do is check if there is a diagnostic utility built into the BIOS. If you can find it, then run it and see if it gives you any errors with hardware. Not sure what function key is needed to enter the bios on an Acer, but it is usually F2, ESC, or DEL at the "Acer" splash screen when the laptop is turned on. You can look thru the BIOS to see if the hard drive shows up at all. If it does, then do the following:

Does it always shut down at the same point of booting? if it shuts down at the same point over and over again, then there is probably something wrong with Windows. Insert your installation CD and boot to it. After you select your language, you'll see an option to "repair" windows. It will then look for the Windows installation on your hard drive. After clicking next, it will attempt to repair whatever is wrong with it. Try to boot again. Keep in mind if there is more than one thing wrong with Windows, you may need to boot to the CD again to repair another problem, as it tends to repair problems one at a time.

My dell vostro 1015 gets completely shut down without giving any prior warning..i have to restart it again and it shows that windows didnot shut down properly.it happens 3 to 4 times a day.plz help..

When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a can of compressed air to do this.

Boot up with the vista disk that came with your laptop and do system recovery again. Ignore the file corruption message because your going to be reversing your OS back in time to when your files weren't corrupted. Back it up to a time you know it works, the dates will be listed. Afterwards things should be fine, but know that vista does this alot for alot of people. NOTE: when you go back in time you will not have any files you had inbetween the date you back it up to and today. OTHER THOUGHTS: those mac commercials from way back when weren't just Evil Apple iPropaganda. Consider updating to Windows 7, I've never had a problem with it- where as your boot loop error happened to me on a weekly basis.

Laptop randomly shuts down and shows a blue screen saying

Make sure you don't have any unecessary programs loading up into windows when your laptop boots up. The next time the system randomly reboots check to see if the laptop feels a bit warmer then normal. Could be that your air vents are being blocked by dust. That would cause the air not to flow properly. Take a can of air and blow the vents clear so the air can flow properly and that would take care of the problem.

My dell inspiron 1525 has a black screen with a white cursor showing

First, I want to know if you sees the Dell logo after turning on the laptop? If yes then this is no boot issue.
1. Immediately run the PSA. Make sure laptop is off. Press and hold down the Fn key, while holding down Fn key press the power button at the same time just once. Once the Dell screen loaded you can now let go of the Fn key. Check if the PSA will run short test for the LCD, RAM and HDD. When full color displays on the screen just press Y. PSA will continue. Just take note of any error code will appear on the screen such as 0141, 0142 and 0146 these are HDD failure errors which means HDD needs replacement. If the test says no errors found then proceed to step 2;
2. Try restarting the laptop once you see dell logo then keep tapping F8. Select last known good configuration. Press enter key. Just wait and check if laptop will load Windows. If not then, restart laptop keep tapping F8 try to select safe mode check if it will load Windows. If not then prepare the Windows OS disc the one came with your laptop.
3. While laptop is on insert the Windows OS disc. Restart the computer. On the Dell screen keep tapping on F12 to show boot menu. In the boot menu select CD/DVD ROM Drive. Press enter then keep tapping on space bar until it will say Windows loading files, please wait.
4. In the User Interface it will show you some options to select. Once the Install screen comes up look on the lower part select Repair Your Computer. If will ask you to do Startup Repair, please do start up repair. If fails try the System Restore. If fails then step 5;
5. If you have important files in your HDD then back up your files first. After backing up of files you can now install the Windows OS. Here is the process in installing the Windows OS. Insert the Windows OS disc, restart the laptop, keep tapping F12 on Dell screen, on boot menu select CD/DVD ROM Drive.Install the Windows OS. Just complete the installation.After the installation install the laptop drivers.
