Question about JVC AV-48WP74 48" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Red shadow on all images

I have a JVC 48WP74 HDTC rear projection that is about 4-5 years old. I bought it used. We moved it into my apartment. Worked fine for about a month. Then all of a sudden, I have like a red tint or shadow for all the images on the screen. I talked to a local technician and he said I needed a new convergence switchboard. He said it would run me about $300-350+ for the parts and labor. But, doing my research it sounds like I can mess with the convergence to line the red bulb back up? I don't know. I have no expierence with tvs but just reading through other similar problems and possible solutions, that could be an option rather than spending 350 on a part when I bought the tv for 300. Any solutions?

actually I have a AV-48WP34. That is the model number. Do you think I need the same parts. With this red shadow, which usually a shadow that is off a bit ( usually down and to right) does that mean I need to adjust something that may have got knocked loose or will replacing the covergence ICs (STK392-110) and feed resistors? and JVC convergence resistor kit #1 take me back to the picture I used to have before the screw up.

    thanks

You will need to cahnge the Convergence Ics for sure and possibly the feed resistors. You will need two STK392-110 Convergence ICs and 1 JVC convergence resistor Kit #1 you can get the parts at the following link with free installation instructions with pictures. Heres the link.

your model is the same as the AV48WP30 so you can actually order just the AV48WP30 convergence repair kit as that contains both ICs and all the resistors in one kit. Its actually cheaper than buying the two Ics and then a resistor kit since you dont have the WP74 series.

Pictures have a green shadow on all images

Remove front grill and chip board ,there are three knobs one is for brightness I think another for a sharper picture (best to use while convergance adjustment and the third which should balance your
black or white screen to have blue, red, or green tinge ,you like to have it as neutraul as possable.
if you are stll getting everything in blue, green or b-52 agua marine ,your red lamp may be burnt out!.

Picture shadowing and waving pictures

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.
