I recievced a dell pc desktop dont know what model it is but its set up for a corp network. cant get pass password would like to wipe drive and install xp have disks. how do i go about this. i think its...

The model name, and model number is usually on the back of the computer tower, next to the Windows Product key, or up on the side of the computer tower case.

Sometimes you have to open a door on the Front Panel, and it is located inside. (Not on the door. On the computer. The Front Panel is the plastic front of your computer)

You have XP Installation disk/s?
You are aware that Microsoft's User's License states,
"Only one genuine copy of Windows per one computer"

(Microsoft makes a Master disk of an Operating System. The copies made from it are bought by the consumer. These are GENUINE copies)

If the Windows XP installation disk you have is a fresh disk, I suggest you go to BIOS Setup, and in Boot Options change the first boot option to CDROM.

Windows doesn't 'like' having the same operating system installed over it.

Making sure that your optical drive, (CD or DVD. Player or burner, doesn't matter), is the first boot device, will override the above.

How to get into BIOS Setup for a Dell? (It's actually BIOS Setup utility)

Dell uses different keys on the keyboard for their different models.

A) The Dimension models usually use either the DELete key, or the F2 key.

B) The Inspiron models use the F2 key

C) The Latitude models (Desktop computer) use the F2 key

D) The Optiplex models may use either the F2 key, or the DELete key.

E) The Precision models use the F2 key.

Computer off, right after you press the Power On button, start tapping, (In 2 second intervals), on the appropriate key for your Dell model.

Note that I stated two different keys for some of the above models.

The procedure to find out which is the correct one, is to simply try one that is listed, and if it doesn't work, try the other one.

HOWEVER, you try using the first key.
Doesn't work?
Then you need to start all over.
You need to reboot the computer. (Restart)

Press the CTRL, ALT, and DELete keys at the SAME TIME.
This will restart, (Reboot), the computer, where you can try the other key.

Once you are in the BIOS Setup utility, you need to look for Boot Options.
There are many types of BIOS setup utilities, and Dell didn't/doesn't use just one.

You may see Boot Options in the top header of the BIOS Setup utility.
You may not.
If it isn't listed at the top, scroll down to the listing similar to,
Advanced BIOS Options, and open it.

[In the BIOS Setup utility you can no longer use your mouse.
You will use the Up/Down Arrow keys to highlight the area you wish to open, and then press the Enter key]

Password reset on XP

1)
1. Place your Windows XP CD in your cd-rom and start your computer (it’s assumed here that your XP CD is bootable – as it should be - and that you have your bios set to boot from CD)
2. Keep your eye on the screen messages for booting to your cd Typically, it will be “Press any key to boot from cd”
3. Once you get in, the first screen will indicate that Setup is inspecting your system and loading files.

4. When you get to the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to Setup Windows now
5. The Licensing Agreement comes next - Press F8 to accept it.
6. The next screen is the Setup screen which gives you the option to do a Repair.

It should read something like “If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, Setup can try to repair it”
Use the up and down arrow keys to select your XP installation (if you only have one, it should already be selected) and press R to begin the Repair process.

7. Let the Repair run. Setup will now check your disks and then start
copying files which can take several minutes.
8. Shortly after the Copying Files stage, you will be required to reboot. (this will happen automatically – you will see a progress bar stating “Your computer will reboot in 15 seconds”
9. During the reboot, do not make the mistake of “pressing any key” to boot from the CD again! Setup will resume automatically with the standard billboard screens and you will notice Installing Windows is highlighted.
10. Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen and when you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. This is the
security hole! A command console will now open up giving you the potential for wide access to your system.
11.
At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter. You have just gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel.
12. Now simply pick the account you need to change and remove or change your
password as you prefer. If you want to log on without having to enter your new password, you can type control userpasswords2 at the prompt and choose to log on without being asked for password. After you’ve made your changes close the windows, exit the command box and continue on with the Repair (have your Product key handy).

How do i bypass the primary drive lock password

On the mainboard near the coin battery you'll find a jumper. take it off and reboot. Replace it and reboot again. that works sometimes. If not you can go to the motherboards' BIOS like Phoenix and they have backdoors built in. Read on:
Backdoor passwords Many BIOS manufacturers have provided backdoor passwords that can be used to access the BIOS setup in the event you have lost your password. These passwords are case sensitive, so you may wish to try a variety of combinations. Keep in mind that the key associated to "_" in the US keyboard corresponds to "?" in some European keyboards. Laptops typically have better BIOS security than desktop systems, and we are not aware of any backdoor passwords that will work with name brand laptops.
WARNING: Some BIOS configurations will lock you out of the system completely if you type in an incorrect password more than 3 times. Read your manufacturers documentation for the BIOS setting before you begin typing in passwords
Award BIOS backdoor passwords:

PHOENIX BIOS backdoor passwords:

Hate to say this .. if the BIOS is locked , there is nothing much, that can be done.
You need to call Dell Tech support , verify the account information and they would give you an unlock code for the BIOS . Once thats is done opening windows is easy .

Thanks
