Clutch may be smooth but this is a sign of the clutch needing replaced. Some of these models have a linkage adjustment under the hood. Others are hydrallic and need fluid. Look under the hood where the steering is and see which you have and address accordingly. Good luck. Check on costs of clutch replacement.

The problem sounds like the clutch. If you put it in 1st., then start it up, does it try to move with you foot on the clutch? Does the clutch pedal feel different than normal.

The dipstick is behind the battery, below the master brake cylinder and is not the clutch reservoir. It has a red flip top handle instead of a ring like most dipsticks. It was hard for me to find due to engine grease. I had the same problem and was able to see that I was low on fluid (only a little) and adding fluid helped the problem. Questions? kurt1431 at comcast dot net.

a common problem with riders that speed shift (not that i'm saying you do) is that the clutch plates wear into the basket and or the shift forks bend or break either way you may have one of these problems or even shift detent or drum may be bad
