Question about Samsung HLR5067WX 50" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

Deep Humming Noise

I dont know how else to describe it. Just started randomly and dont know whether its the color wheel or the cooling fan. Picture is fine and so is the audio. When turning on the tv one can hear the humming noise start to get stronger until it reaches its max level (which not too loud but annoying nonetheless). When you turn the tv off, the humming noise goes on for about 10 seconds after and then goes silent.

Is this the color wheel or the cooling fan?

Also, are the parts for the HLR5067WAX the same as HLR5067W?

Are you sure? It seems like the noise im describing is the color wheel- atleast form what everyone else says.

the noise is like a buzzing/humming that fades as i turn the tv off.

  • manavmalhotr Jan 22, 2009

The noise stays on for like 5-6 seconds max.

after my tv has been on awhile it starts humming. If I shut it off for a little while and turn it back on the humming stops for a bit then starts back up, which makes me think it has something to do with heat.

My HLR5067 has no picture and as soon as I plug it in it starts the deep hum.

If the noise continues after you power down its the cooling fan

yes the parts are the same for those two models. The color wheel will hum if the bearings go out, but the sound will stop once you shut it off. If it stays humming for a minute or two after powering down its the fan as the fan will run for a minute or two to cool the set down. How fast does the humming stay when you power down?

That would definately be the color wheel, as the fan would continue to run.

I've a Samsung DLP Model HLR-4266WX that has started to hum and is distorting the picture. I've replaced the cooling fan on the heat sink in the back and that didn't work. Is there another fan in the set...

Color wheel would be cause of hum noise and distorted picture on screen.
Please note that color wheel is not user level repair and requires expertise because it is located in light engine, the most sensitive and expensive part of dlp tv.
If you are good with electronics stuff fix then have service manual copy in hand to start inspecting color wheel.

TV MAKES A HUMMING NOICE WHEN TV IS ON, WHEN TOUCHING THE BACK OF TV WHERE NOISE COMING FROM IT IS VERY HOT. IT WILL THEN GET LOUDER AND EVENTUALLY CUT OFF TV. TV WILL COME BACK ON AFTER IT COOLS OFF. WHAT...

It is either the color wheel or a fan. To isolate the color wheel, remove the back cover and make sure you put the lamp door back on so that the door interlock switch is activated. Turn the set on and get the picture and humming noise going. Just to left of the rear fan there are some wires. One is a really flat brown or rust colored ribbon cable that plugs in to a board on the left of the wires. This is the color wheel ribbon. When you unplug it the set will keep going for a moment or two but if the noise stops, you will know it is the color wheel. Don't be alarmed because the set shuts off with this ribbon disconnected. Just let all the fans stop (for proper cooling) and then unplug the set for 5-10 minutes. If the humming did not stop you have a bad fan motor. Plug the little ribbon back in while you have the set uplugged. Plug the set back in and turn it back on and try to isolate which fan it is, if it is a fan. If you determine it is a color wheel, the light engine will have to be replaced as Toshiba does not offer just the color wheel. If it is a fan, those can be replaced. I hope this helps. Let me know what you find and thanks for using fixya.

Humming noise coming from TV and picture color fluctuating

Humming is very common on this brand and model of tv. It is usually the cooling fan and the color wheel, the color wheel is the one that get loud. I think that is our culprit. I will get back to you with more information shortly.

Humming noise

There are only two moving parts in this set. The fans and the color wheel. Typically when the color wheel starts to break or go on the fritz, the tv stops working. Count your blessings you've still got the picture. Open the back and turn the tv on. The color wheel is located on the optics block tray. The fans are very visible with the back off. Stop the fan for a second and see if the sound goes away. If not, you might want to start looking around for a replacement color wheel. Rivervalleyelectronics.net is a good place to start. Sometimes Discountmerchant.com carries them too. Be aware that there two different wheels available. If the fan is the culprit of your problem. Radioshack will likely have a replacement for you. If you need further help, post a comment or email me and I'll send you pictures of what to look for. Cfoley@hawaii.rr.com
Good luck.

My Samsung 50" DLP HDTV keeps humming when the DLP lamp comes on.

Hi, you have one of two problems, either the color wheel is going or one of the cooling fans are going, the color wheels are a very common problem in samsung dlp`s, sorry I can`t nail it to a specific part but I`d bet it`s the color wheel as they are notorious for failing in samsungs, video-tek

Color wheel bearing can make the noise you describe, and that will also cause color distortions.

I am wondering if this sound might be your color wheel spinning. The color wheel often makes a low humming noise as it spins. Try checking to see if this is not the source of your noise. You need the color wheel to generate the colors needed to turn the B&W picture generated by the DLP into a color picture.

Thank you,

My TV loudly hums when I turn it on

Ok, I just picked one of these babies up this past weekend. It was cheap, so I didn't bother with the research once i saw that it powered on and seemed to work.

It was sold very cheap because it was throwing codes, which the previous owner was told was a cooling fan. Due to my computer hardware experience, I decided to trace what the problem was. The 2 accessible fans were working flawlessly and silently, the 3rd fan (going to the input components) was stopped due to dust bunnies. A can of air and a complete cleanout solved all issues with the cooling fan codes. The loud annoying hum is the motor that turns the color wheel. Since I had everything out of the TV anyway, I decided to trace the sound which is actually behind the color wheel and sounds more like a bearing or mis-balance in the spinning motor. The color wheel itself is in perfect condition.

In the meantime....annoying hums are fixed simply by turning the volume on your tv or sound system up - it's barely noticable during normal operation and is only really annoying when initally turning it on.

Hope this helps someone.
