Question about SanDisk Cruzer Micro 4GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive

1 Answer

Had to erase USB drive Data, now Vmailer wants $40 for synch prog

The Vmailer synch program was free with the U3 4GB thumb drive. Is there a way to get a registration key to be able to use this without having to pay for it again. I could buy a brand new USB for less and get the free version to update my files. Can you help?

Hi ,

you can try to get a free synch program for your U3 device , for example : Allway Sync n Go

if you want to delete the information on the device , you can format it as a regular Hard Disk (my computer, right click on the USB drive letter and choose format)

I accidently erased valuable set of of custom made programs by resetting to factry specs. Any way I can find that lost program?

Yes, remove the drive immediately and do not use it. Everything you do may overwrite the older data. Get a sata to usb adapter (assuming it's a sata drive?) and run data recovery software with the drive connected via usb to another computer. You can do it on the original machine without removal but this greatly increases the risk of irretrievable deletion. How to Completely Erase a Hard Disk Drive

Erasing a hard drive is a step that most computer users overlook. Just simply going through your data and using the delete key in Windows does not entirely delete the data. This just simply removes the shortcuts making it not visible to the user. If a person wanted, they can easily use software to obtain the data off the hard drive.

Fun Fact
A study was done and were 158 used disk drives were collected and the data retrieved. The two students found 5,000 credit card numbers, medical reports, detailed personal and corporate financial information, and several gigabytes worth of personal e-mail and pornography on those drives.

Disk Wiping Methods

There are two common methods for erasing data. These are formatting and wiping. Formatting a hard drive will not erase the data on the disk but will delete the address tables making it more difficult for average users to see the data, however, a computer specialist who is skilled can obtain some or all of the data using tools. Disk wiping is a more effective method and basically write over the data with 1's or 0's. The more times the disk is overwritten the more secure it is.

Disk Wiping Software
There are numerous free software utilities out there that will wipe your hard drive. I will recommend two programs and briefly go over them.

Eraser - Click here for download

Eraser is a advanced security tool for Windows that will completely remove data from your hard drive. It has a simple to use interface and uses multiple wiping methods such as Peter Gutmann's paper Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory.

You can use this program to delete files, folders, recycle bin contents and even free space on a drive. Click here for a quick start guide which will give you the basics.

-You can even use Eraser to wipe your flash drive.

Darik's Boot and Nuke - Click here for download

Darik's Boot and Nuke is basically software you boot your computer into. You can load the software into a floppy disk, CD, or USB stick if supported by your computer. Once you boot into the program, you select the wiping options and it will do the work. This is an effective program and I have used it before.

In order to boot your computer to the software you will first need to load the software on the media(usb/cd/floppy) described above then insert the media into your computer. Turn off your computer and as it is booting up you want to go into your computer BIOS. Usually, it will tell you what to press to get into BIOS during the boot up process. Once inside the BIOS you will need to change your boot order so it boots to the media device first. Once done, exit the BIOS saving your changes and the computer will boot into the media and start the data wipe software.

Tips

-If you are installing a new operating system I recommend you first wipe the hard drive using the methods described above, then formatting the drive for the new operating system. If you are giving away the hard drive or computer, I would recommend you wipe the hard drive before doing so.

I formatted my USB drive (Memorex 1GB) accidentally causing the loss of software and its whole system what should I do to get all that?

Deleting or formatting won't make the data in USB drive erased permanently.

Those deleted data is still stored on the USB drive , it's just invisible or inaccessible. Only the FAT or NFTS table is erased (the information about where those data were saved), but the real data are still intact there in sectors of the hard drive.

So as long as those data are not overwritten by new data, it's highly possible to recover them. And the MOST Effective way is to rely on some format recovery programs.

Try this format recovery software called asoftech data recovery, which can recover data after deeply scanning your USB drive to look for lost data you accidentally deleted or formatted.

Usb drive use

Most thumb drives are used like floppy or rewritable optical discs (excluding ReadyBoost and the bootable versions). They are most often formatted as FAT drives (under Windows). If the drive is good and the USB port is good, plugging the drive into the computer's port should trigger a "new hardware found" message from Windows.

In Windows, open My Computer or Computer (depending on the OS) and you will see it listed under Drives with Removable Storage. You can use the file explorer to navigate through your regular drive and copy files to the thumb drive or the reverse. (I usually open two different windows and drag the files with a right-click then select Copy.) Synch programs can let you keep the thumb drive and hard disc copy at the same version. Alternatively, you can save a file directly from the program that you are usng to edit the material. (File > Save As and chose the destination). You can also open the file from the thumb drive in a similar mode. To avoid lost data, always select the Safely Remove Hardware from the taskbar (or Eject from the File Explorer) before unplugging the drive from the port.

The biggest problem is that the FAT formatting limits the number of files you can put on the disc unless you keep them in folders. (The same number of folders can be in the home directory as files without using folders.)

Bootable thumb drives (as well as those that can run software directly from the USB drive) come with software that lets them do this. Then they act like any optical disc with Autorun and executable programs. Readyboost is dealt with completely by the OS and keeps the drive (or portion of the drive) separate from the area that will store files.

Sometimes these drives do fail. Getting the data off the flash memory takes a professional most of the time.

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(You can copy all of the files from the thumb drive and reformat it at intervals. Then copy files back if you are concerned about file fragmentation.)
