Question about Samsung HLN617W 61" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

Samsung HLN617W Tantus 61" DLP occasionally will not turn on.

When I try to turn on the television, it will cycle 3 times and then all three lights on the front will illuminate. I have to unplug the set and try again. Usually, after I unplug the set 3-4 times and power it up, it will eventually start up. Any idea what causes this problem?

same problem with my hln467w. it's been happening for years. I think I've finally hit the wall today. Have cycled through many times with no results.
Most times i can hear the sound come on before the screen ligts but not this time. I read something about the ballast being out. has happend several times over the years even when new. usually comes on after a coulple cycles

It sounds to me like you have an issue with the ballast not firing the lamp. It sound like you know to check the lamp, but there is no way to check the ballast, unless you replace it. The ballast is not that tricky to replace, but if you are not sure I would refer you to a technician to replace the part.

Samsung hln617w dlp tv won't turn on. Red temp

Had similar problem. Thought it was the lamp. Examined old lamp but it appeared to be good. Ordered a new one anyway. Changed the lamp but the TV screen would not come on. It would make the usual noise as it was going to come on normally but it would cycle 3 times & then turn off. The LED lights in the front panel would indicate a defective lamp. Then read about the ballast. Changed the ballast & still same problem. Tried starting the TV without the lamp installed & noticed that the color wheel did not spin. Removed old color wheel & discovered it was broken. This appears to be the cause of all of my problems. I wish I new earlier of the test-turn on the TV without the lamp being installed & check to see if the color wheel is spinning. Would have save money on the lamp & ballast.

Samsung DLP HLN617W TV does not turn on, all 3 lights flash

In this case it seems you may have an issue with your ballast. Either it's going out or barely starting. I recommend you replace it

Samsung DLP TV won't turn on

This sounds to me like one of two possibilities. First, check your ballast. If you're going through bulbs faster than you think you ought to be, you may have a ballast that is overloading. Its the 3" x 8" circuit board that connects directly to the bulb. They are plentiful and often cheap. Thats what I'd try first. If that doesnt' do it, I would invest in a new power supply board. That the board that the tv power cable hooks directly in to. This should give you a start, Comment back if you still need further help. Good luck.

No picture but sound once it goes off there is 3 blinking lights

Most likely for this symptom is the lamp. If you'd like you could sit behind the set and have someone turn it on, you should hear the color wheel spin up and then you should hear the ballast try to fire the lamp, it makes a small arcing sound. If the lamp doesn't light the process starts over again.
