Fridge will not run

I had the fridge in my garage. I was exposed to sub-zero temperatures. It was exposed to the freezing temps for about 10 days. I move the fridge into the house. I pluged it in the fridge will not run. Is there a reset button? Do I need to call a service person?

Thanks,

SOURCE: Fridge exposed to cold temps.

No there is no reset button. It could be the internal fan has gone bad or the compressor is shot. Unless you have bumped any lines and caused a freon leak.

Refridge temp

Lets go over the way a sealed system works. There is a highj side and a low side. The low side is the side that passes through the evaporator coils inside the machine. Most times on the freezer side only, but sub zero has independent sealed systems for each side. Once it goes throug the evaporator its then condensed into a liquid state, the high side. This is also the hot side. Well, lower pressures in the low side would logically mean lower temperatures. So for the refridgerator not to freeze more freon is used on it to keep the low side pressure higher than normal, giving the cooling effect verses freezing. So, and here is the bad part, if you are seeing ice build up in the refridgerator side you have a freon leak some where allowing the pressure to be less than required to keep it above freezing. Call a service technician and depending on how the model, sub zero warranty is parts and labor covered for the first 6, and only parts from the 6-12 year.

My sub zero service light and EC 24 are flashing, fridge is getting warmer...suggestions?

The ec 24 alarm is from a sensor that is located behind the freezer wall and connects to the control board in the ref. When the temp gets to a certain point the sensor will trip giving the alarm. If the temperature in the freezer is gone up but is around the 20 -30 degree F range, I would remove the grate that covers the compressor and check to see if the fan is running and if the coils are dirty. Either one of those can cause temps to go up. If the fan is running and the coils are clean, Call a service company because you possibly have a sealed system issue

You need to put a heat source in the fridge compartment near the fridge thermostat. Try putting a lower wattage bulb (40w) into the fridge compartment. Or even try this, take the door switch out of the fridge and short the two leads together. Tape the exposed ends with electrical tape and that should provide enough heat to keep your compressor on long enough to keep the freezer cold. Just remember to put the switch back in in the spring and summer months or you will have a real high electrical bill. Hope this helps you.

Can a refrigerator be placed in a garage that houses the electric furnace?

Hi, all fridge freezers work on ambient room temperatures, ie room temperature. Also it will depend on the classification of your fridge freezer. On a normal classification fr/free 70 degrees should be a constant maximum. On a sub normal classification room temp should not exceed 50 degrees. on a sub tropical room temp can be pretty much as warm as you like. On the rating plate inside your fridge freezer two small letters exist (N) normal. (SN) sub normal. (ST) sub tropical. Most fridges will work for a while in the wrong temp but will work too hard and pack up

Put in garage now unit will not keep cold or freeze.

Since refrigerators were designed to run in your 72° kitchen, when you put a fridge outside, where its colder than normal operating REFRIGERATOR temperatures, i.e. 35-40°F, because that ambient temp is colder than fridge temp, the thermostat in the fridge section reads it as normal temperature, and does not turn unit on. it does not read what the freezer temp is. You have a couple of choices: bring the unit inside, heat your garage, or only use it for pop and beer in the summer. You can reply here or send me a question from my website: www.FixMyFridge.net

Refrigator not cooling properly, freezer works fine

I'll assume you don't have much food/items in the freezer section. Because you have the fridge set on the max cooling setting and the freezer set higher than the mid setting, it could be that you have frozen the cold air passage from the freezer to the fridge.

If you can, 1) remove all contents that would spoil; 2) turn off the fridge 3) open both doors and allow the fridge to manually thaw out completely (this will speed up the opening of the cold air exchange passage between the freezer and fridge, which is likely blocked and frozen solid. Have plenty of towels handy to soak up the water from the defrosting process,

After a FULL day of being left off and doors open to thaw out, check for any further thawing and dripping water inside, if present wait another 8 hours (you really want to get it thawed out the first time!) When that's done, reset BOTH temperature controls to the factory mid-point setting (5?) as marked on your control knobs.

The key to having a refridgerator run properly is to allow for it to run at the factory settings for at least 24 hours BEFORE you adjust the controls higher and/or lower for each section. Adjust it up or down in ONLY 1 setting increments so as to not cause ice build-up and freezing of the internal air exchange passages.

Also, as you've relegated this fridge as a garage "beer & backup" unit, make sure to keep the freezer as full as possible to make it run as efficiently as possible. You can freeze jugs of water and pack it with cheap thrift store bread to help it run correctly. An empty freezer has to work harder to keep just air at freezing temps. As such, it will pass much colder air into the fridge, and cause these types of freeze ups. By the way, turning up the temp controls only makes it worse and just results in a total "freeze up" inside the cabinet panels that you can't easily see or get at to rectify, hence the reason to shut it off and let it fully defrost.

When you're done, you should have your fridge back in action working like it should, but remember, don't rush temperature adjustments, even thou we all want those frosty beverages, it'll take a couple of days to achieve the desired "chill" you're likely used to getting when it was your primary fridge.

Hope this helps and Best Regards! Semper Fi!
