I have the same problem...but I noticed that the longer the deck is on,
the brighter the lamp becomes. However, it does not gain full
brightness as compared with my second deck right next to it.

The display on the AG-1980 goes dim mostly from old age - replacement of the display usually cures the problem, though you may need to replace some or all capacitors in the power supply.

Did you try cleaning the tape head of the player?

For some reason be sure all the gear or any mechanical inside the player is freely rotating.

Adjust the VCR tracking to get a good picture.

1) I turn on the power and place a prerecorded

If it is not a bad soldering joint somewhere, it could be the mode switch. They can sometimes be cleaned with Servisol Video 40, but you might have to replace it.

No power. led display very dim

dim display on an ag-1980 may be caused by bad display module or bad electrolytic capacitors in the display power supply. "no power" is probably a bad 12 volt regulator on the main board. the main power supply is working as evidenced by the display lighting up.

Error 2 on Front Panel

I'm not sure if this is a solution, but it cleared up the problem for me. It turned out there was a loose paper label for the cassette that got stuck inside the VCR with the cassette.

I had to take off the top of the VCR by removing the three screws. I then removed the jammed loose paper and then was able to get the cassette out. The flashing number 2 (whatever that means) went away. The machine seems to be working fine now.

H02 error on AG-1980 is a "capstan motor error." most likely problem is a defective capstan motor.

Dead, plug in, powers up, goes dead

This is the typical way that drive belt problem occur. The mechanism needs some slip to accomodate the changing reel speeds as the tape plays, but if it slips too much, the reels don't move at all, the processor thinks there is a problem and turns off.
Time for a belt job.

you may have a slightly damaged power supply...although swapping the main supply chassis may solve, I have seen front panels that have an additional supply section. look on the front panel board for any TP's and probe with an O-scope. if you see a TP that may also show (+ xx V), where xx is a numerical value-may be one x only, the scope must show a straight horizontal line that is shifted vertically away from its normal (ground) position. that confirms a DC value present. then determine the DC value of the shift. Another possibility, since you invested, is to search ebay for a second unit for part swapping. look for as-is units.
