What do you mean by not work? does it come on? If you have no ground it will still come on but you will not hear anything until it is grounded. Also your SWR has a good part in it. If it is to high you will not be able to hear the person next door and you have a chance of burning out your finals over time. keep the SWR out of the red and you will be ok as far as the finals go.

SOURCE: CB transmission

Hello 64driver,

Make sure the radio is grounded properly and that the SWR is around 1.2:1, 1.3:1 is good but try to get it to 1.2:1. Also take a power output reading while keying the mic. To do this with your power meter put it in-line with the CB and your antenna and key the mic you should get about 4 to 5 watts PEP. If this is the case your unit is putting out the proper power level, if not have the power amplifier checked by a qualified repair shop.

I hope this helps

Do i need a certain antenna?

The fiberglass provides no ground plane area for the antenna and radio waves. Your Standing waves (aka: SWR or Reflect) are probably very high. I suggest mounting the antenna on the cab of the truck. You "could" try aluminum tape on the cap and mount the sheilded side of the coax to it somehow. Without a ground plane much of the RF Power of you CB will be reflected back to the Final Output Transistor(s) (Final or Finals), overheat it and possibly damage and burn it/them out. If you are just running the CB without an amplifier(Linear or sometimes called a box), a magnetic mount antenna should work fine and be less of a problem than permanently mounted antennas. That's a plus when going into a parking garage. Even if you decice to get an amplifier at a later date, you should be able to use it with the magnetic mount antenna as long as the antenna you but is rated for several hundred watts, you Standing Waves are Low, and the amplifier doesn't put out more power than the antenna is rated for. I hope this helps.

Added new antenna and now im failing rf output and antenna radio test?18ft coax and a 48in ant.

First thing is to be sure the mount is not shorted in any way--and also to make sure that where it is mounted it is actually connected to ground--many newer vehicles have insulators so a bumper even if metal has no ground to work off of.

No ground, open or short in coax, open or short in mounting bracket all can cause no swr or high swr.

When i key my mic my antenna light comes on. i have tried 2 different antennas and it still does it. what can i do to fix it?

The problem is most likely the coaxial cable.
A ground problem can cause this problem. Coax connection and bottom of antenna lug mounted should be in contact with mount's base. Antenna should not touch mount there is a insulator between them that antenna shaft passes thru. Mount must have a metal grounded mount location is a electrical circuit also.
Check SWR with the meter in radio. The ant light circuit could be out of alignment from factory.

Here is the list just scratching the surface.
  • Bad antenna
  • Bad coax cable ......grounding externally or internally with shield.
  • Bad/poor ground for antenna..........door to body, painted parts when mounted elsewhere.
  • Antenna installed incorrectly. Nylon grommet must insulate antenna from contact with mounting bracket. Coaxial connector must have contact with bracket for grounding.

I can't get the swr value close to 1 it's over 3 what am i mising

Several things are working against you.
1 Antenna location= Needs to be in CENTER of car or truck, and high. no grounded metal can be next to the element (the hot/positve part of the antenna)

2 the only way to really ground the antenna is by having a flat metal ground plane under the antenna. DC grounding does NOT do this, that is a misunderstanding.

3 make sure you use a tunable antenna. I have found the wilson's to be very easy to tune and performe very well, for a base loaded antenna.

4 in short a wilson or k40 magnet mount placed on the very top of the roof in the center will have a perfect ground plane. Then shorten or lengthen the steel whip to ajust your SWR's. You will get the best results this way. This is the ONLY way to achevie good performace.

5 I will say this the absoulte best antenna is the 102"steel whip, if you got the clearnce and dont mind it hitting tree limbs put it on a big magnet mount with a spring at the base and youll have a perfect antenna. But the wilson is shorter and easier to tune.

Antenna isnt grounded

Could be fuel pump whine.
You'll have to add a electrilytic capacitor from the pos lead to the pump to chasis ground. Or, get an antenna mount that mounts to/and is grounded to the body of the car or truck. You can also try ground straps from the body to the trunk lid if the mag mount is on the trunk lid.

Truck boxes may be the best looking place to mount a CB antenna but in my experience they are the worst place for performance.

The 'ground' you need is not an electrical ground but an RF ground. The easy answer is that you need to mount the antenna to a mirror or the bumper or even use a magnet mount instead on the roof. The body of the vehicle provides an RF ground that the small truck box cannot. The only way it might work is to use flat, wide ground straps at all four corners of your box to the bed of the truck. You need metal-on-metal contact.

Generally this is not a good idea. The antennas that are designed for use with a car, use the body of the car as a ground plane. If you try to use this in a house (or even outside the house), it's not going to work.

Your only chance at even getting such a setup to work would be to attach the antenna to a LARGE flat piece of metal, approximately the size of a car, which is then grounded with a long metal rod into the earth.

I'd really suggest looking into buying a proper home CB antenna, which would then need to be mounted somehow to the roof of the house (or as high up as possible.) If this is not a feasible option, you should do a Google search for "CB Dipole Antenna", and get instructions on how to build and tune your own antenna. Dipoles are not overly difficult to construct, and perform quite well.

What antenna would you recommend for my cb? cobra 29ltd

depends on what vehicle its going on. If its a car, you don't need anything crazy, unless you are going to run a linear.

You are fine with a wilson 500/1000 mag mount or a k40 mag mount.

just make sure you tune the antenna for lowest SWR.

if the antenna warning indicator is lighting during transmission then the antenna is either located and.or installed improperly or a defect exists in the antenna mount or the feedline itself, including connectors.
