Not sure if it's the same problem as yours or not..... Even when the printer is turned off, it will make a noise about once an hour or so. It sounds like the print heads 'un-park' then park themselves again. Strange...... Bob
The burning smell is natural as you have a laser printer.
Most the printers take some time whenever they start to prepare for printing. While doing this some noise may come which is due to mechanical adjustment.
you should manually reset your PURGE COUNTER to ZERO so that your printer will work again. Follow these steps:

1. To enter MAINTENANCE Mode: Press
MENU, MONO START, 4X on ARROW UP. (within 2 seconds).
2. Using arrow up button look for the

b. 0 then
3. Using MONO START, just press it until
the word "PURGE XXXXX" comes out.
4. Using arrow up button look for the
a. 2 then
b. 7 then
a. 8 then
b. 3 then
This is to reset the purge
counter. Then press stop/exit
5. Using arrow up button look for the
a. 0 then
b. 1 then
press SET (To reset unit)
a. 9 then
b. 9 then
press SET (To exit Maintenance mode)
Depends what you mean by 'strange noise'. If this was the case ever since you bought the machine, then its normal, if you do not get any printer errors. Most printers make noises while they are initializing, lots of gears and stuff moving around inside...
If this is a fairly new occurrence, please explain in greater detail, so I can provide a solution (if there is one:)
