Question about Maytag Washing Machines
When you say drain hose do you mean the drain hose behind the machine or the hose between the tub and the drain pump? The hose behind the washer will not clog but if in a standpipe make sure it enters no more than 4-5". Otherwise you can get a syphoning reaction.
A more common problem would be the hose between the tub and drain pump. It can get full of all manner of items, so it needs checked for sure. Give it a squeeze, it's very flexible and objects are usually easy to feel. If that feels clear, which is doubtful if it's never been cleaned. Check that the pump motor is humming. If not unplug it then plug back in and test. If still nothing you probably need a new pump or there could be an object stuck in it preventing it from operating. Let me know.

First drain as much water from the drum as possible and unplug from the outlet. Then there are 2 screws left and right under the front lower panel at floor level. Undo those two screws. Pry the front panel DOWN from the door panel. Once the lower panel is removed you will see the pump and pump filter on your right. The pump filter is to the left. It has a large turnscrew. Be ready with a pan or something to catch the water from the open filter! Screw this counterclockwise until it comes loose. You will now be able to remove the filter and all the debris. After cleaning, re-screw the turnscrew. Before you put back the front panel test that it is clear by doing a wash. If it still doesnt drain you must remove debris from the pump itself. The pump is between the pump filter and the pump motor on the right. Undo the white clips from the motor and the retaing clips attiching the filter to the metal washer body. Then turn the motor clockwise to separate it from the filter. Refit carefully after job is done. And fit outlet tube a correct height, not too deep. <courtesy tzotsi>

Possible explanation: Some water is left in the hose going up to the drainpipe b/c the pump can only pump water with water, not air... so when the last bit of water is sucked up, it 'stays' just the other side of the pump exit nozzle and keeps the drain tubefilled. This water gradually leaks thru the drain exit valve and back into the machine, sometimes siphoning standing water in the drain trap with it.
The valve is either electric solenoid or plastic/rubber clapper in a cylinder. Your call whether to fix or not depending on ease and cost. Probably a $20.00 part.

On something like this you will need to remove the washer wrap to inspect the suspension springs & base assembly. Please see the link provided for accessing the inside of the washer. Be sure the shipping pins have been removed. The tub should float freely.

On the 9700s it's even easier - three screws on the front bottom panel below the door, then use your hand to unscrew the large round handle in the front center. When you can't unscrew any more, pull gently and the filter / catcher will come out.
It's amazing how much stuff mine held - 4 breastfeeding shields, a pencil, a pen, a fake mouse, and lots of grey gunk.
Screw it back in, put the panel back on, and you're in business.
