Camera approximately two and half years old. Batteries checked and lens is clean. Appears to take pictures but screen is black and only pictures that can be reviewed are ones taken before problem happened.

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

Hi,
If your Canon A60 camera shows previously saved pictures in memory card in playback mode but does not show live view in camera mode than ccd imager chip in camera got defective and will be replaced.
Canon offers free of cost ccd imager chip replacement. Click Canon CCD Imager Advisory to avail that FOC service.
Thanks.

Look at the menu in your digital camera and see if you can spot a reset. If there is a reset push it and it will take you back to the factory settings.

Black screen wont show images

May be the issue with CCD (image sensor device) of the Camera.

Refer this article to cofirm this.

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?mdl=DSCT1&news_id=161

Check whether the LCD screen of the Camera looks similar as given on the page.

If yes, click on the "Yes" button at the end of the page to create an online Repair Request for sending the Camera to the Sony Factory Service Center.

All I see in the view screen is a white screen. I have a power shot A60. It will switch to showing pictures already taken and those pics are fine.

Canon Power Shot SD 400 Digital Elph - image not on screen

On most canon elph cameras you can either go through the menu and reset back to factory default and this might solve the black or white screen. If that does not work you should be able to hold the menu button down for several seconds until a reset prompt pops up. You will then click on yes for reset and this should completely reset the camera and the screen should be back to normal.
