Question about Microsoft Zune JS8-00001 Digital Media Player

Equalizer is not fuctioning

I don't know if it is a hardware problem with the audio output, sound board (if it has one, not very familiar with zune hardware) or a software problem with the equalizer, but sound quality is not working properly despite any change to equalizer setting. vocals and treble are much much quieter than they should be to the point of being drown out by backup rhythm sections. i can't access the software and i don't know where i can take it for a diagnostic to be run.

.. Can't access the software? On your computer? Doesn't matter, the Zune software won't help.
.. What firmware version do you have (on the device)? Should be 3.1, go to Settings, then About, then Zune, there is the firmware version (& other stuff meaning nada)
.. There is absolutely no change to the sound quality when you changed to each of the 8 different EQ settings? Did you try a different headset? I hate those bud things & have 3 different headsets. Each have different playback quality and I swap out an EQ setting for each one.
.. Ain't nowhere (yet) for you to bring the bugger in. MS is keeping tight reins on repair and diagnosis. Check this MS Support page for some ideas.

No audio output device is installed

That statement might be true. The audio output device is hardware. If the hardware is present, go to control panel, hardware and sound, sound, audio devices... look for audio hardware, At that point, I like to delete any devices, then go to actions, search for new hardware. If found, windows will usually know what drivers the devices need. On some PCs you need to have a driver disk with special drivers If no hardware is found, you need to go to a PC repair shop or buy a book on PC maintenance and repair...I like the book, others like the repair shops, your choice.

Are you good with replacing surface mount components while wearing 5 to 10 power loupes to see what you are doing?

Do you have a controlled heat soldering station, anti static workstation, 100 mhz oscilloscope, audio signal generator, capacitor analyzer, and familiar with reading schematics ???

Do you understand the shock hazards and risk of working on energized audio equipment under test..if so I can start to help you with this repair.

I need a wiring schematic too hook up a equalizer to a receiver

No schematic is necessary - the audio outputs of the play station go into the audio inputs of equalizer - then connect the audio equalizer output into the audio inputs of the receiver, could be labeled aux or whatever. Then turn receiver source control to the input you used and voila, SOUND.

AKG 120 on Mac, I don't get feedback on headphones or internal spekears . Recorded voice , I can see is there but can't hear anything....

Sounds like you have a computer sound issue. If the waveform is shown, and the amplitude is sufficient then it should playback audio. Not familiar with Mac but check mute settings, sound card volume, input/output config., audio routing, etc.

With the 07, you may have vibration damage to one of the main boards interlayer traces.
There are issues on those bikes that will need to be checked and the radio will need to be repaired

Double-check the MENU settings for the audio output. If you use just a 4-pin plug, the ZUNE does NOT use the standard configuration like a Panasonic device does, it is an oddball output on the 4pin plug.

Low sound

Your set should have a separete stereo amplifier board ,follow the wires from the speakers and it should take you to it,tap on this board and see if the sound changes if not try taping on the main board, dont over do it and do not use anything metal use the plastic handle of a screwdriver,it should not take too much to make it react then you know you have a loose conection,if you are familiar with tv service this should help but if you are not too familiar be safe and call for help.If you dont have loose conections at the audio output the voltages will have to be checked.
