Question about Dell Dimension 5150 (DIM515MIN) PC Desktop

DELL DIMENSION 5150 WON'T STAY ON

TRYING TO SOLVE FOR A FRIEND. THIS UNIT, 3.5 YRS OLD, WILL NOT BOOT. IF I START FROM A COLD MACHINE, SOMETIMES I CAN GET WINDOWS UP THEN IT GOES DOWN, WITH IN 30 SECONDS. THE POWER SWITCH GOES ORANGE. AFTER A COUPLE OF MINUTES THE HIGH SPEED CPU FAN COMES ON, RUNS FOR 30 SECONDS AND GOES OFF. THE POWER LIGHT WILL GO OFF, ALSO. HOWEVER, THE LOWSPEED CPU COOLING FAN WILL REMAIN RUNNING. AFTER A COUPLE OF MINUTES THE CYCLE STARTS OVER. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
THE ONLY UNIQUE THING ABOUT THIS MACHINE IS THE VIDEO CARD WHICH IS A POST-PURCHASE ADD-ON, WITH BOTH VGA AND DVI OUTPUT.
I HAVE NO WAY OF TESTING THIS VIDEO CARD. THE POWER SUPPLY FAN WORKS SO I AM ASSUMING THAT IT IS O.K.

Don't think it's the operating system. This definitely acts like a hardware problem.

Even thought the fans are running, the power supply or the board has a problem

Your power supply is not sending the correct voltage to the cpu and therefore the cpu shuts down by default

I STAND CORRECTED. AFTER REVIEWING THE REPAIR MANUAL IT TURNS OUT TO ACTUALLY BE YOUR OPEATING SYSTEM IS CRASHING THE COMPUTER. YOU WILL NEED TO BOOT FROM DISK. IF YOUR COMPUTER IS NOT SET UP TO DO THIS YOU WILL HAVE TO PRESS F2 EXACTLY BEFORE THE WINDOWS SCREEN POPS UP. CHANCE BOOT OPTONS AND SELECT CD DRIVE.
YOU THAT CAN BOOT YOUR CPU FROM THE CD DRIVE AND THEN DO A SYSTEM RESTORE TO A PRIOR DATE BEFORE YOU WERE HAVING THIS PROBLEM.

There is a either a problem with one of the capacitors on your power supply or the voltage switch in the back is not on 110

Welcome to Fixya! You will need to Reinstall your Version of Windows. You have a Corrupt Install that is Forcing Restarts.

Dell dimension 5150 wont boot past post. I've tried afew things but nothing works. can you help? thanks

If it won't go past POST then there is a hardware error. Try removing the hard drive and RAM. The mother board should complain at power on giving messages. If it does, try fitting the RAM module by module, then the hard drive.

Dell Dimension 5150 will not start!

This is related to Hardware.

There might be a lose Ram of data cable connection on Motherboard.

This type of issue is also seen when the there is dust accumulation on Process Fan and CPU fan resulting in over heating.

This might also be due to malfunction of a motherboard.

The third reason could be that SMPS his not working.

Dell Dimension 5150 Boot Problems!

You can probably try two things here.

1) Go to the BIOS and reset the defaults.
2) Clear NVRAM from your Dell computer. Here is how you do it.

Try manual cleaning the graphics card and the RAM by removing from the slot and rub the pins with pencil eraser as shown in the images.

And re-attach them to the motherboard, also clean the graphics card's fan with small paint brush. Works for me, hope same goes with you.
