It was working fine til a couple of days ago and now will not go on at all. I have charged it and tried turning it off and on several times but it made no difference and I can't seem to find a master reset. It is about 18months old so the warranty has gone.

your charging port on the garmin i bad, this happened to one of mine also, just call garmin, tell them you bought it a couple months ago, they will replace it for free. But don't tell them it was bought over a year ago othewise the warranty will no longer be good.
harman kardon gps 500we will not turn on, I am not sure why, its was working fine the day before and the next day I try to turn it on and it would not, I try to reset the satnav, that did not work either, I took it home and try to charge it overnight, that did not help, I suspect the battery because while it did not come on it did not felt warm from charging it overnight, if is the battery where can I get a replacement. I have no warrenty because I brought it 2 years ago.
push and Hold the power button down while you push reset, keep power button pressed til it boots again. If it does not, and it's in warranty ship it to garmin. If it's out of warranty, have someone open it up and remove the battery for a couple of minutes.
I have had the same problem several times (as well have some friends).
This resolves it EVERYTIME though... at the SAME TIME, hold the BOTTOM LEFT front button AND the Bottom LEFT SIDE button (this reboots it). Then just hit the power button... I am sure you will see that it powers right up.
The problem is probably not with the USB cable if the GPS wont even turn on. The older firmware of the Forerunner 205 and 305 have a problem with locking up. This causes the Forerunner to look completely dead. There is a reset procedure: push the mode and reset button at the same time and then let go and hit the power on button. If it powers on that is the problem. Go to the Garmin site and load the newest rev. of firmware into the Forerunner. Fixed mine and a few friends with the same problem.
I do however have a cable problem. Sometimes my PC will come up with unrecognized USB device and my 305 wont talk to the PC, it does charge. It is the cable or dock for sure, because I have tried a different cable/dock and the 305 has no problem. This is the reason I ended up here. I hope the lock fix works for those with the above problem.
