The PTO usually has a clutch that has to be engaged so that you can select the PTO rotation setting. I had a problem like that on my tractor and all it needed was a little adjustment on the PTO clutch lever, so it could disengage the PTO gearbox properly.

Remove Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the Carburetor Body. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed.

Set the Engine Idle Screw (Not Idle Air) so the Engine will Stay Running if Required. Now Set the Idle Air Mixture Screw so there is No Hesitation when Throttling from Idle to Full Throttle. Reset the Engine Idle if Required.****
>>If This Carburetor has a Single Air Adjustment (Except Tank Mounted 9200 and 100900 Engine Model Carburetors), Use the Section Above that Pertains to Full Throttle RPM Air Mixture Screw and then Adjust the Screw if Required to Eliminate Any Hesitation when Throttling from Idle to Full Throttle.
>>For the 9200 Model Tank Mounted Carburetor Adjust the Air Mixture Screw Full In, then Reverse 1 1/2 Turns. Set the Throttle Lever to Full Throttle and Start the Engine.
>>Now Carefully Use 1 Finger and Open the Throttle Plate and Over Rev the Engine Slightly. If the Engine Over Revs and Does Not Struggle to Over Rev, then the Carburetor is Set. If the Engine Struggles to Over Rev, then Turn the Adjustment Screw In 1/4 Turn and Repeat the Over Rev Test.
>>If you Adjust to 1/2 Turns In and the Engine Still Struggles to Over Rev, then Return the Adjustment Screw to 1 1/2 Turns Out from Snug and Turn the Screw Out 1/4 Turn. Do the Over Rev Test. Continue this Process Until you have the Engine Over Revving without Struggle.
>>By Adjusting the Carburetor on this Style Carburetor Until the Engine Over Revs without Struggle, you have Adjusted the Air Mixture to the Best Possible Setting.
>>This file was Intended to Give you the Basic Carburetor Cleaning Instructions and May Not Reflect Your Carburetor Components.

SOURCE: How do I remove the PTO clutch from a John Deere

Locate and disconnect the power supply cord from the clutch. Remove the bolt, washer and retainer from the center of the clutch, It should now slide off the end of the crankshaft provided you have previously removed anything such as body parts or braces that would be in the way. In some instances penetrating oil must be used to help free it up. When you reassemble it, it is a good idea to use a little bit of anti-seize on the engine shaft in case you have to remove it in the future.

Check and adjust your RIO switch{reverse implement option}near the trans if so equipped.What happens when you press forward pedal then engage blades?Would also check the lower bearing on your pto clutch to see if its seized up.

How to remove and replace pto clutch on John Deere x300 mower


Unplug the wires to the clutch, the wires plug in on the right side. Remove the bolt retaining the clutch, 5/8 socket. You might need to take 2 pry bars, one on each side of the clutch on the top side to work it loose.

Where is the fuse that runs from the p.t.o of a John Deer riding mower ?


Go to upstateoutdoorpowerequipment.com, look up your engine type not mower brand and you can get an illustrated parts view of it. If not in engine type parts view you can look it up in your mower brand. Engine will have a plate on it that gives engine info. Mower info is usually under the seat. If PTO is not engaging it usually means low battery charge or the PTO switch is bad.

John Deere x300 series 2009 model I unhooked the kill wire and it started. But now my mower/pto will not engage is there a way to bypass the sensor?


Based on the combination problems involving the coil kill wire and the PTO activation, I would suspect the PTO switch is bad.

I do not have a schematic for the 300x, however I most of the functions are comparable to the LA 145, 165, 175.

The PTO switch is a multifunction switch. It will have 3 to 4 different functions internally. On the LA 175 it serves 3 functions. These 3 internal functions are independent of one another. Electronically they are known as single pole/single throw switches. In other words even though they are all housed inside a single unit they act light 3 separate light switches in your house.

One function ("light switch") controls your cranking system. When the key is turned to Start, power flows from the Key switch (purple wire) to the PTO switch. With the PTO switch off it flow out (purple/white) and goes to the Brake switch. If the Brake is set the power flows through to the starter solenoid and your engine cranks.

Another "light switch" inside the PTO switch controls the Blade Clutch. Power flows from the Key switch, in run position, (yellow wire) to the PTO switch. With the PTO switch on it flows out another yellow wire to the Blade Clutch. A DC volt meter should show 12 volts switching on and off as the PTO is turned on and off.

The third "light switch" completes a Ground Path. This ground path is a totally separate pathway running through the PTO switch. The ground system is fairly complex because it operates differently under different scenarios.

To produce a spark, the key switch must be in the start or run position. While starting the PTO must be off and the brake set. The seat switch does not matter at this point.

Once the engine is running the seat switch plays a part if the PTO is activated or the Brake is released. Someone must be in the seat.
The Kill system is activated
  1. When the key switch is turned off.
  2. When the operator leaves the seat without setting the brake and turning off the PTO.
  3. When the machine is reversed while the PTO is engaged and the back up switch (RIS) is not pressed.

So there are three different paths to ground; any of which can kill the engine by grounding the coil. Except for turning off the key, all other grounding functions flow through the "grounding light switch" in the PTO.

Because you have a combination problem, the Coil kill wire is grounding the engine and the Blade Clutch won't activate the blades; both of which are affected by the PTO switch, odds are you have a bad PTO.

Obviously there are too many complex functions to just bypass the switch. You will have to replace it. The part number you need is AM135131. Ive got a john deere 4055. Has a new clutch and pto release bearings and piston. The pto will not ingage and there is no pto pressure.


did the mechanic that installed the new parts pre prime the hydraulic pump on install , ive had limited luck using another tractors pump on remote circuit to back feed on the return line to "externally) prime the pump , but it has worked a few times , worth a try if you have the means

Why wont john deere stx 30 pto wont engage


Most of these mowers have a safety switch between the PTO switch and clutch. A safety switch or relay is most likely the problem. Hope this will help ya.

Engine starts and runs Great. When I engage the Pto leaver on my John Deere L100 the mower fails.


at the point of lowering the pto it's trying tosuck more air to mix with the gas .you might just need to change the air filter.
