Will come on stuck on gray with an apple and turning wheel

This happens when your computer can't find and load the operating system. You need to start from another CD or hard drive so you can run the Disk Utility program. Try using your original operating system CD that can with your mac and press the either the control key and the C key or just the C key to force the computer to boot (start up) from the CD rather than the internal hard drive. Then ignore the messages on the CD to install the operating system and find the Disk Utility program in the pull down menus at the top. Find and select your internal hard drive for it to repair. If you cannot find it, likely your hard drive has crashed. You will need to replace it and install a new operating system on it.
In that case, your data may be lost on your old hard drive.
If you have a external hard drive, depending on the interface, plug it in to the appropriate connector (firewire for example) and boot from the hard drive, then run the Disk Utility program from there.

If you have no operating system CD, try to borrow or buy a copy, it must be of a version that will work on your model of computer.

Forgot my administrative password

Creating a new Admin on Mac Os X:
Here's how to reset your OS X password without an OS X CD.
the Working solution for me was to create a new admin
you can create new admin like this by deleting a specific file.

You need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:

1. Reboot
2. Hold apple key + s key down after you hear the chime.
(command + s keys on newer Macs)
3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):

mount -uw /
rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
shutdown -h now

4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and your good to go again!

How do i access my account from another computer

You'll need to download and install a program on the remote machine that will allow you to access your account. Chicken of the VNC is free and works well. Download it at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/.
On the machine with your account, go to sys preferences, and choose "Sharing", Choose the way you want to access your account (ex: Remote Login or Screen Sharing). I suggest requiring a password with both.
Once that is set up, you can use Chicken of the VNC to brows and access your other machine.

The remote worked fine with a Mac Pro laptop. Now that I am trying to use it with a MacBook laptop, it suddenly won't do anything with my PowerPoint program. I can use the laser pointer and that's all.

Hey dlaruel,

Assuming that you're talking about an Apple Remote:
Go to System Prefs, and find the Security panel. Near the bottom, there is a check box "Disable remote control infrared receiver".
Make sure it is NOT checked.
Next to that is a Button labeled "Pair..."
Click this button to "pair" your remote to this computer.

Macbook pro freeze

Check how much hard drive space you have free.
Also, how much ram do you have?

How to Increase the Speed of a Macintosh Computer
Step1
Rebuild your desktop once a month by holding down the Command and Option keys as you restart your computer. Leave the keys pressed until the computer asks if you want to rebuild the desktop. Click OK.
Step2
Remove fonts you never use. (Open the Fonts folder in the System Folder and drag the fonts out.)
Step3
Open the Extensions Manager control panel and turn off system extensions you don't need. For example, if you're not on a computer network and don't have a printer, you can turn off printer drivers and file-sharing extensions.
Step4
Purchase and install speed-increasing software, such as SoftwareFPU from John Neil & Associates, Speed Doubler from Connectix, and Norton Utilities from Symantec.
Step5
Add RAM if your computer takes a long time to open programs and slows down when working with multiple programs or large files.
jQuery('.Article .Steps .Image').each(function(i,e){ var $this = jQuery(this); $this.find('img').error(function(){ jQuery(this).remove(); $this.remove(); }); }); Tips & Warnings
  • If you experience problems after turning off extensions, turn them all back on, then turn them off one at a time. Restart the computer and see if the problems recur. If they don't, turn off another extension, then restart and repeat until you find the one you shouldn't have turned off.
  • Remove only those fonts you have added that are not required by any program.
  • Don't turn off an extension unless you're sure you won't need it. If you have a PowerPC, be especially wary of extensions marked .lib or library. Multiple programs use these libraries, and you may experience severe problems if you turn them off.

Not starting up

Hi, I' sorry to hear you are having problems,
Walter, I am confused, you say it is a brand new MacBook that shows signs of technical problems,... before installing any software program from the internet, please bring it right back to where you purchased that machine, they will be more than happy to get you back up and running.
Apple is very serious about their reputation and would hate to know that you are stuck with a non functional brand new macbook.
They should not charge you anything....
Now, if you are far from an apple point of service, and you say it is a brand new Macbook, can you reformat the hard drive without losing anything ?
If that is the case, go ahead and reformat the hard drive, or erase, the option is available to you in the installation process and then try it out, you should not have the problem anymore.
And please do not install any web program in the system other than Apple stuff to help manage shut downs or anything like that...
Well, good luck..
