I would also check fuel flow. pull the gas line from the carb and see if gas flows out at a good rate (into a metal can of course) or if it trickles out. if the latter, then gas tank either has junk at the bottom preventing the gas from flowing or the vent hole (usually on the gas cap) is plugged.

i have also had my carb float bowl rust out on me, but that took 10 years.

Install carb kit, they are very fussy when it comes to fuel flow..

Black smoke is generally indicative of a rich fuel system. whitish blue smoke is generally burning oil.
It sounds like there is something wrong with the fuel metering at full throttle. You might check that the mechanical compression release isn't coming on when you go to full throttle.

to be honest the enigne ahas a control that the left side must fire and run before the right starts to fire it sounds to me like you have a fuel issue possibly the carb. is gummed up and dirty.

Mower backfired a few times and died it wont run now unless you hold the key on at that time all it does is pops and backfires with every revolution

I would check for water in the carb bowl and also the flywheel key maybe sheared allowing the engine to be out of time with the ignition and cause it to backfire and pop.

Enigne backfires after I turn the mower off

Probably, but need more info. How old is the mower? Was it fixed or tampered with recently? is it a "cared for" mower? (Not left outside in the rain and snow...etc...) Backfires can have a few causes. Too much fuel, way too lean of a fuel mixture, (Not enough or wrong type of oil or mix ratio) Misadjusted mixture screws on carb, idle set too fast/high, generally it is a adjustment issue though. Try a tune up! Ya small engines need them more often than you'd think! And there is one more culprit for the loss of power you mentioned, and it may or may not be causing the backfires but you never know...and that is the mower blade's "sheer pin" or "Breakable keyway key" If (with the mower off) you reach the blade and try to spin it in both directions and it seems to move out of sync with the engine crankshaft (or wiggles a bit too freely) Than you need to replace the split /broken key with a new one. I had a Craftsman do that to me once and all the power returned like magic after replacing it. BE Careful! Its an easy fix if that is it, but you have to give more info.

12.5 hp craftsman runs fine for only the first 1/2 hour or so

You are so right, the coil has a small crack the opens up as it heats up. You know the old saying as metal heats it expands this causes a open circuit.

I started my craftsman 21hp 42in deck today it had a rough idle with backfire and when engade mower it seemed to not have enough power

Backfiring is a sign of too rich on gas and not enough air. Not enough gas will cause the mower to bog down when blades are engaged as it isn't powerful enough to run the motor AND turn the blades. Check your carb and see if you need to clean it and replace diaphgram. Sounds a lot like a carb problem.

Rough runnig , backfiring when hot, no power

this may seem funny but, are you sure the fuel tank cap vent is working? It sounds like the engine is not getting proper supply of fuel, that's why it kinda runs with choke on
