Hi Richard,

I'm an electrician and can help you with this question. I'm not quite sure of your question as there is no mention of a dimmer - yet it is in the dimmer category. A transformer rated at 70W should be able to support 56W of lighting, as the lights represent 80% of the capacity of a 70W transformer. Your terminology is a bit unclear however.

Transformers are usually rated in VA, not watts - but if you've got one that says it is rated for 70 watts, this is generally the maximum power it will handle, NOT "minimum". I guess I would feel more comfortable knowing what the transformer is a part of and the type of lights / fixtures you're trying to use with it.

Some lamp types (fluorescent, and other types with a "ballast" or tansformer) are not supposed to be placed on a dimmer circuit - *unless* it is labeled specifically as usable on a dimmer circuit.

I am imagining that you are attempting to use a line voltage track and light fixtures that have a built-in transformer (making them low voltage lights really) on a dimmer, or some other arrangement whereby you "dim" the input of a transformer to control the brightness of the low voltage lights. Regardless of the wattage of the transformer or lights - doing so will create a fire hazard and should not be done. Transformers are designed to work at specific voltage and frequencies (60Hz) and should never be connected to a mismatched power source.

If I am missing your question, please provide a "bigger picture" of what you have and what you are trying to do.

That is the supposed Maximum Wattage the computer will use per hour.

Variables come in to play, however;

1) Back when the computer was made, the Power Supply manufacturers were 'fudging' the real maximum rated Wattage.

True ratings were more like 60 to 70 percent, of what was actually stated.

Divide 200 by ten; take it times;
6 for 60 percent. 120 Watts
7 for 70 percent. 140 Watts

So, the Actual Maximum Rate Wattage, could be as little as 120 Watts, or a little more than a 100 Watt light bulb.

2) Second variable is what is the computer being used for?
Surfing the internet? About 100 Watts.

Playing an intensive game, (Yeah right. Not on that computer), or using an intensive program?
Then, you may be using the Maximum rated Wattage,
120 to 140 Watts.

So,........the hourly wattage rating, could be as low as 100 Watts per hour, or perhaps up to 120 to 140 watts per hour.

Also include the power used by the monitor.
If you do not have the specifications of the monitor, see if you can look them up online.

Add the two together to get a basic conclusion, of what Wattage per Hour your computer system is using.
Don't forget to include printer/scanner/fax machine/copier, WHEN being used.

What type product (switch?) do you have?
What type of device did you replace? Single-pole, 3-way, 4-way switch? Timer? Fan-light switch? Multi-purpose switch?
What type voltage, and what wires are you working with?
What does instruction sheet say about load rating? For example, some devices do not work with CFL, while others have minimum watt rating. All devices have load ratings, including maximum wattage.

Theoretically.

Back in the day when this computer was made, Power Supply manufacturers were 'fudging' a bit on the truth.

(HP has their Power Supply's made by another company.
Bestec, HiPro, and Delta, are three of them )

Actual wattage is more like 60 to 70 percent, of what is stated.
250 divided by 10 = 25.
25 times 6 = 150 (60 percent)
25 times 7 = 175 (70 percent)

Your Power Supply's actual maximum rated wattage, may be as low as 150 Watts!

Going with the Power Supply produces a maximum of 250 Watts;

If you are playing an intense game, or have several programs running at once, you MAY reach using 250 Watts.

Just surfing the internet? About 100 Watts.

Desktop PC plus Monitor:
1) Surfing Internet: 149 Watts, or let's just say - 150 Watts

2) Computer is maxed out running hard?
249 Watts, or let's just say 300 Watts.

Voltage times Amperage = Wattage
Wattage divided by Voltage = Amperage

Number 1 above? About the power it takes to use a 100 Watt light bulb, and a 50 Watt light bulb. (Incandescent)

Number 2? About the power it takes to run three 100 Watt light bulbs.
(Incandescent)

Power into unit ok power comming out of unit is very dim.


If you have a volt meter, check the voltage, I believe it is supposed to be 12 volts.
Are your bulbs the proper voltage rating, that is 12 volts.
Do you have enough bulbs connected to the transformer, connected load should be close to 121 watts when you add up all your bulb wattages.
Don't confuse volts with watts. The transformer reduces voltage to 12 volts, but the wattage of the transformer is 121 watts. Each bulb must be 12 volts but wattage (brightness) can vary depending on the fixture from maybe 7 watts to over 50 watts.

-Replace the compact florescent bulbs with regular incandescent bulbs and see if problem continues.
-Lighting controls are made for different kinds of bulbs.
-Your package should say what the watt rating and type of bulb.

According to the PR180 manual:
-I am looking at the Leviton PR180 occupancy sensor manual, and the PR180 sell-sheet, and these documents say for incandescent and fluorescent (rapid-start magnetic ballast only).
-Compact fluorescent are supposed to have a magnetic ballast.
-The manual does not specifically say it works with 'compact fluorescent'
-The manual does not say there is a minimum amount of wattage either. Some controls will not work correctly if the overall wattage is low. Your overall wattage is 39watts.

Read the product package (if this is a new installation and you have the package)
Try the incandescent bulbs.
If the PR180 is not your product, add a comment with product number and I'll look for information

Hello yes you can the Important thing to remember here is not to exceed the wattage that the transformer puts out.

Add up the wattage of each bulb that you are running and ensure that you do not exceed 300 watts.

for example a 300 watt transformer could drive
a. 10 - 30 watt bulbs
b. 20 - 15 watt bulbs
c 75 - 4 watt bulbs

Its also ok to mix bulb wattage for example I use 10 watt bulbs in the fixtures in the front of the house but also power 4 20watt spotlights from the same transformer.

My low voltage landscape lights are constantly going on and off once the timer activates them initially. I suspect there is a short somewhere, but is there a good way to locate the short besides pulling up...


Your transformer must have output greater of the total wattage required of the entire system. Example: Putting lights that draw a total of 250 watts with only a 180 watt transformer will result some lights not working, or dimming and flickering, or intermittent power outtages. I learned this from experience. Always go with a transformer that has more wattage available than what is needed. Also, using the incorrect gauge of wire can cause the same issue. Wire creates resistance. Distance the power must travel through the wire creates more resistance at the end of your run than the beginning.

I'm disappointed that Dewalt does not have the full specs on their website so . . .
Check the specifications on the charger's label; they should read something like 120 VAC or Volts AC and 2.0 (or similar) amperes or just 'A' after a numerical value.
If the label does not give you an amperage value you can use the output value instead and substitute the output voltage at the high end if a range is listed.
To get the adaptor (step-down transformer) wattage, multiply the AC values such as:
120 X 2=240 watts input power.
If these AC values are not available;
Take the high end charge voltage if it is a multirange charger, and multiply those values;
One we own DW9108 (- yours is 7.2 - 18) is spec'd at 9.6 to 18 volts and 2.8 amperes:
2.8 X 18=50.4 watts.
You can see that the values do not correspond but it is a multirange device so the maximum current taken from the AC line can be ~ 2.0 amperes but this is charging a specific pack and the peak input current is only momentary so the maximum output current and voltage are the values one should use as a guide. In other words, the output wattage is closer to the value needed.
Since there are losses in any transformation (mostly heat), the required stepdown transformer must be capable of more than the indicated 50 watts.
A safe factor would be 1.5 X 50 (W) or ~ 75 watts minimum to ensure the charger receives the 120 volts it wants.      
Anything that will step down your (?) 220 volts and is rated at 75 watts or more will do the job even if the Dewalt draws a little more current at your line frequency of 50Hz which it may.
