Question about Audio Players & Recorders
There is a wiper on the back of the volume control that varies the resistance through the switch to control the volume. When you move it back and forth you are scraping the oxides off the switch and making it work again. I suggest you either get some contact cleaner and spray the control from inside (where the wiper is) or just change out the switch.

SOURCE: I have a Sony Air
HI I HAVE FIXED THE SAME FAULT ON MY SONY SCANNER BUT NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED!. YOU WILL HAVE TO UNSOLDER AND EXTRACT THE CONTROL AS THE TRACK SPRING LEAVES HAVE BECOME WEAK AND ARE NOT TOUCHING THE TRACK PROPERLY.CAREFULLY TAKE APART THE CONTOL CLEAN ANY RESIDUE ON THE TRACK AND CONTACT SPRINGS THEN RE ASSEMBLE AFTER SLIGHTLY BENDING THE CONTACT LEGS TO IMPROVE PRESSURE ON THE TRACK. BEST OF LUCK I HAVE GOT A SPARE WHICH MIGHT FIT YOUR MODEL. CHRIS

SOURCE: I've got a Sony STR-DH800
There is a disparity in the impedance of the speakers and the outputs of the receiver - the speakers are too weak and they act as a short , damaging the amplifiers , hence the Protect status being engaged.
Trying to run the receiver with a wrong set of speakers has probably damaged it. Get a correct one and try the setup only with it, if you're lucky it was just the safety system cutting the output.
