What do you mean ringing? Is it gas or electric? tankless? when does it ring? when its hot? when its being used? when it shuts off? Need more info to help you.

It sounds like you have an electric water heater and it kinda sings in a high pitch? If so thats the element heating up and thats usually not a big problem. Some times it can be a sighn thats the tank needs to be flushed or the element going out. But time of year it just the water comming into the water heater is just a lot colder than in the summer time and the heater has to work harder to heat that colder water.

It is a gas heater with a tank, in a closetlike enclosure in the back of the house. I can hear the ringing inside. It lasts 10-30 seconds. I wouldn't call it high pitched. The frequency of the ringing has become more frequent. When it first happened, it was infrequent. Now, as often as 3x a day. I think maybe the sound happens after we run hot water (but not immediately). I can't tell from inside when the heater shuts off. The sound is drone like, sort of like a tuning fork, but without any vibrato. Gets loud, then tapers off. The heater is 5 years old and hasn't been flushed (we didn't know we were supposed to do it). Whirlpool suggested that we drain in, put 2 gallons apple cider vinegar in it for 6 hours, then flush it. A plumber said we may have a pressure valve problem. What do you think?

Change o ring

I just tried to replace one of the o-rings on an AE125. The old original one came out distorted do to the fact that there's no groove to hold the o-ring in a uniform position.
Even though I was careful and evenly tightened the cap screws,
the new o-ring started leaking an hour after I had left the job.
My opinion is the mounting of the metal lid to the plastic tank is a bad design.
Good luck on your repairs.

Water valve leak

No, its correct. Its just labeled incorrectly in the manual. The Bushing should be pushed up all the way(use dish soap to lubricate that oring) and the clip installs on the bottom of the bushing.

Rheem water heater pilot lite stays lit, burner goes out

Tripped FV or TRD, or bad gas control valve, low gas pressure, air in gas line.

Unfortunately, Rheem does not post service manuals. Other companies post service manual, but only Rheem uses TRD FV system, while other companies use arrestor screen.

Ruud p40-7 water heater

You can get a sudsy water solution and brush it on all over the place especially around joints and look for a leak via tell tale bubbles. If it is the water heater that has the leak there aren't too many places where you can have the leak and it should not be all that hard to check out.

High water pressure might be causing problem.
Use Brady BTG-100 pressure gauge to check pressure on nearby spigot.
Add a pressure reducing valve on incoming water line.
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Check-water-pressure-250.jpg
Water heaters, tankless and tank-type are damaged by high water pressure 80 psi.
House plumbing fixtures also have shortened lifespan.

However if water pressure or water flow are too low, then burner will not activate.
Tankless are like bowling on a ship sometimes.

Installed a new 50 gal electric Rheem water heater. Within about an hour the tank began making a strange bell like ringing. When you shut the power off the noise stops. What the heck?

Sounds like pressure building up in your line to much. Did you make sure to get all of the air out of the system by opening up your relief valve?

Water dripping from brass nut under water tank

you will have to shut your water main off to repair. Drain plug , you may need a new o-ring replace 0-ring and turn water main back on, remember to relieve the air pressure with the relief valve.
