After restarting the laptop it goes back to where it was. I did a scandisk and virus scan.

One other note; it did not shut down when I log on into Safe mode. A compatible issue?

Instructions

1

Purchase a new fan for the Sony Vaio model you have by checking the owner's manual of your computer or consult the Sony website for the correct part number.
2

Remove the power cord from your computer and then remove the battery. Unlock the battery and slide it from the bottom of the laptop. Allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes after removing the battery.

Turn the computer with the left side facing toward you and locate the only screw found on the left side and remove it. Remove the panel by sliding it toward you and set it aside.
4

Slide the panel covering the power buttons to the left and detach the ribbon cable connecting it to the motherboard and then remove the panel gently.
5

Remove the keyboard by unscrewing the small screw directly above the keyboard. Once the screw is removed, gently lift the keyboard and detach the small cord connecting it to the motherboard. Set the keyboard aside.
6

Remove the plate under the keyboard by unscrewing the three screws and lift the plate out.
7

Disconnect the cooler fan from the motherboard by pressing the connectors in and removing them from the sockets. Once the connections have been removed, lift the cooling fan up out of the computer.
8

Replace the old fan with the new one you purchased and attach the two connectors. Reinstall the metal plate back on top of the fan and attach the screws.

Laptop powers up i log into any user acct . and within a min or 2 i get a system shutdown message and comp counts down for 60 seconds then shuts down and restarts c:\windows\system\32\lsass.exe ...

You have unfortunately picked up a copy of the old lsass virus. This was someone's idea of a funny virus in as much as it would just keep giving you the countdown and shutting your computer down. If you have an anti-virus program installed on your computer what you can do is boot your computer into safe mode (this can be accomplished by pressing F8 during your computers bootup. On the menu that appears choose to boot in safe mode), and then running a complete scan on your entire hard drive. By booting the computer in Safe Mode all of the extra programs that normally load will not do so. Once your scan is complete, and you have deleted all of the infected files, you should then be able to boot your computer into the regular Windows program.

Thank you for the opportunity to assist you in resolving your issue. Should you need further information or assistance please do not hesitate to let us know.

Which operating system are you using?
Did you install the CD that came with your motherboard?
Do you have a good virus checking program on your computer and is everything updated?
When was the last time you scanned for viruses?

These are the steps that you need to take, and the instructions on how to do it:
1. Reboot into Safemode
2. Run a virus and spyware scanner
3. Defrag
4. Scandisk
5. Registry error repairing
6.Reboot into regular mode windows

Here is how to do it:
Reboot yor machine while holding the F8 key right as it boots back up. A menu will apear. Choose -->"start windows in safe mode with networking".
Windows will start in safe mode. Run an AVG virus scan, then run Defrag by exploring your computer, right click on C: drive, click PROPERTIES, then the TOOLS tab, click the "check now" button, and only checkmark the top box 'fix file system errors', then click ok, the computer will then tell you it will scan upon next reboot., Now click the DEFRAG NOW button. the choose defrag. After Defrag runs for about an hour and it is finished, restart the system. If is still won't run normally, go back into Safemode buy pressing F8 on reboot, then run a registry fixing program such as uniblue registrybooster, then reboot again. If it still won't run right, you may want to reinstall Windows and see if that works.
PRINT THESE INSTRUCTIONS AND KEEP A COPY NEAR YOUR SYSTEM FOR FUTURE PROBLEMS. THIS SERIES OF STEPS CAN FIX MANY PROBLEMS
Good luck.
James.

Dell Inspiron 530 randomly shuts down and restarts

Sounds like it could be a virus. Or, a heat buildup problem - are all fans inside machine working? Is the fan inside the power supply operating? Was there any work done inside the computer recently?
If the hdw is all ok, go out and buy yourself a copy of Norton Internet Security 2009 - 1 user lic - $49.99 @ Staples. Do *not* buy any earlier vers. of this software! Install, update it, run computer computer scan - probably will find/remove some/many viruses.

If this helps, please take the time to rate my response to you.
Thanks and good luck.
