I think what you're referring to is the injector assembly in those older Maytag topload washer's. Here's what I'd do.
If you take the two rubber hoses going to and from the center piece which should be almost clear plastic, you'll find a small rocket shaped injector and rubber diapragm/nozzle type component.
Replace this and you should be fine. The injector and rubber hose typically come together ( or used to before Maytag was bought by Whirlpool ), but double check with the supplier you choose.
The part number is 400646 and usually around $10-15USD, but I haven't had to swap one out in a while so they may be more than that or come separately now.
