Screen is very dark

I changed the batteries and the screen was really really dark. So I knew by using the 2nd and arrow keys it would lighten up. I have it all the way on the lightest setting and it still is really really dark. I have to tip it half the time to be able to see the numbers! any help would be greatly appreciated.
