Dvd stuck on zone 1 when i am a zone 4

The laptop would only give me three goes to lock the dvd region code, problem was it would not except anything other than region/zone code 1. I can't use the dvd to watch any dvd's as I live in a zone/region 4, so all my dvd's are this zone. Yes I could buy region 1 dvd's but then I can only watch them on the laptop. I have been told you can flash the hard drive? but when researching this find out you can bugger your hard drive if you dont do it right or have the right flash?,
Have looked at sites to do this but none seems to work, downloaded some dvd region free program, but that didnt work either, (Or I didnt fiqure it out right). Apart from spending a fortune on paying someone to fix this, are there any other ways?? The laptop dvd is three years old now, and have put up with it for this long, but thought their might be someone out there who knows what to do about this problem.Yes I could trade it and upgrade but money issues are the problem, yes i could sell it but who going to buy old laptop with faulty dvd player, and I kinda like my laptop.

- Thank you for your assistance, sorry it took me longer to reply, my friend needed to use my laptop, till hers was fixed, so only got it back today, tryed your fix, but it says "you can change your region a limited number of times, when reaches zero you cannot change region even if you reinstall or move your dvd to different computer".
This is where the problem was, as it stuck on region 1 with 0 changes remaining....any other ideas :-)

There is a firmware crack that can reset the changes for the region code changes. I will not tell you anymore about the crack other than 1 is availiable as my understanding is it is illegal in most countries.
I will say though when or if you find it set the region code to zero as region code zero will play any other region.

There is software out there that can allow you to not be restricted to region codes. I use AnyDVD. It seems to do the trick without have to mess with your 5 chances to change regions.

Krugs,

If you are using Windows you can easily change it if you have administrator privileges on you laptop. In Windows XP SP 2 (may be the same for other versions but I can?t test to make sure):

- Click on Start, Settings then Control Panel.
- Find the System icon and open it by double left clicking.
- Open the hardware tab and click on the Device Manager button.
- In the device manager list that appears look for the item labeled ?DVD/CD-ROM drives. Expand the section by left clicking on the ?+? symbol just to the left of ?DVD/CD-ROM? icon.
- You should see an object below that that has the name of your drives manufacturer. If you just have the one optical drive on your laptop it should be the only object there. Using the mouse right click on that object and select ?Properties? from the selection that appears.
- In the Properties box that appears click on the DVD Region tab.
- At the bottom of that section you will see a scroll box listing countries in alphabetical order. Find the country you live in (or want to pretend you?re in) and highlight it by left clicking on it once.
- Click on the OK button.
- Close all the windows and test.

Good luck and don?t forget to let us know how it goes.

- Oh, you?ve already exceeded your 5 changes. That is the way it is without messing with the DVD drives firmware which will void your warranty. The motion picture industry (which includes the artists) don?t want you playing DVDs from other regions so they have forced the drive manufacturers to limit the drives in that way. You get five changes, then its locked in. There are hacks around that you can use to change or reset your specific but that?s another story.

You can try to use an emulation/3rd party decoder that will make it region free. DVD43, Daemon Tools,...

purchase new drive for laptop, however these are 2/3 times price of pc one, or you could use an external drive(DVD) probably the same price and can be used in conjunction with all pc/laptops.
