I'll let you in on a little chef secret: White onion! Cut an onion in half, stab the round part with a fork. Heat up the pan or griddle and rub the onion across it. This will help remove all the gunk that gets stuck there.

My Bar B Chef grill grates are totally rusted. Are stainless steel grates better or should I stick with cast iron?

I prefer cast iron. Cast iron heats more evenly and retains temperature better. If they are falling apart from rust, junk them. If they just have surface rust and no holes, all you have to do is brush them with a steel brush at high heat. Wipe them off with a wet rag and then rub it with an onion to provide a teflon layer. if it is really heavy rust, spray oven cleaner on them and hose off. After use or for storage, clean them and then wipe them down with a cooking oil soaked rag. The oil will reduce rust build up.

What chemicals can i use to clean my gas braai,

I apologize I do not know what is a "braai" but since the category is "grills & smokers" I will proceed as though you were asking about a BBQ
Generally it is safe to suggest non-toxic cleaners like Simple Green because there is almost no chance of being harmed by this non toxic cleaner. However, non-toxic cleaners will need a lot of rubbing and scrubbing ad we usually want a chemical because we do not want to spend all day rubbing and scrubbing. Right?
We have been cleaning, maintaining and repairing barbecues for over 15 years and I still like Easy-Off a lot. Easy-Off is toxic but that means it will break-down greases and dirt and old marinades so they appear to be melting off the grill parts.
Please be sure to only scrub or brush grill parts made of materials that can be treated thus because coated grids (for instance) should not have abrasive brushing or the coating will scratch and oxidation occurs. Use heat, rough, green, 3m pads and degreaser for full safety and wire-wheel or sandpaper for real American stainless.
Anyway, I still like Easy Off after a very long time using hundreds of different agents. However, after cleaning make sure to clean-off the chemicals or burn-off for at least 10 minutes. Chemicals can keep you in the bathroom all week so be sure to rinse if you can (infrared burners cannot get wet) or burn-off the parts so there is no residue of the cleaners.

How to clean the grill and drip pan and get the grease and burnt on grease removed without hurting the finish on grill, lid/cover, drip pan, and the heat element

If you have a great amount of caked on grease build up, using a plastic putty knife is a good way to go. It won't scratch the finish and will remove the lion's share of the grease. Follow that, by scrubbing the remaining residue with a wet sponge and Simple Green in a spray bottle (it's biodegradable and won't hurt the finish.? Spray the Simple Green on, wait a minute or two and wipe of with a wet sponge. Rinse the sponge often Do not wet the heating element/burner. Use a grill brush to gently remove any any residue. Actually, it's best to remove the burner to clean it, because it also gives you the opportunity to clean the Venturi valve. As far as the drip pan is concerned, the plastic putty knife will work there too. In the future, lining the drip pan with aluminum foil, will eliminate having to clean it.

The grill grates can go in the dishwasher. Just do not allow them to go through the dry cycle.

My best advice on keeping a grill clean, is stay a head of the cleaning. Not allowing grease and residue to continue to build up. I say this, both as a grill dealer and as an avid professional grill-er.

Hope this has helped you. Please let me know and Happy Grilling!!

Where does air enter a new style gas fired water heater ? how do you clean the air intake area

Air intakes vary by brand and model.
Product manual has complete information for air intake, and yearly burner cleaning and maintenance.

1) You posted under Richmond heaters which is Rheem
For a manual, click on your product and next page has documents that download to your computer, including care and use manual.
Sample manual shows air intake is a grille located on side of tank.
Intake should be kept clean, and water heater never placed in room with dust, link or chemicals. Even trace chemicals will react with burner and prematurely corrode burner parts.

2) If you have Bradford White water heater, air intake is on side of tank through louvers.

3) If your gas water heater stands on 3-4 legs, then air intake is located on bottom of tank, making it difficult to clean unless tank is sitting on bricks.

Here is photo of air-intake screen on bottom of Whirlpool tank.
Tomorrow this heater is scheduled for installation, and it will be put on bricks.
On this specific model the front cover can be taken off, the burner cleaned, and cover put back on using same gasket, and without buying parts.

My 2004 white convertible, I can not get it clean, its like new, never in rain or snow, only 11,000 miles, what is good product to clean it. thank you

If you are really particular about the looks get the chemicals at a Ford Dealer. You will pay more money but the chemicals are compatible with Ford products. In the aftermarket, anything made by EAGLE products will work well.

The problem with household cleaners for the interior is that the chemicals which remove grim will remove the chemicals for softness and anticracking agents. I like Fords' Custom Silicone Gloss for the exterior metal, but it is a light top coat- easy to apply and remove- and flows in lower temperatures.

We have water leaking in the fridge and it smells, we have to clean it every day. It is 6 years old. It is frost free.

There is a pan undert the bottom of your ref it has a plastic line apx 3/8 inch around that goes up to your freezer it goes up the back of the ref on the inside or inside the casing. It goes to a pan in the top freezer this line has pulled loose or become plugged try cleaning it out and pour a small amount of 10% bleach water in the freezer grill this is a air vent grill in the freezer it will kill the bacteria that usually has the smell of garlic. good luck

Hi Sunlark,

I'm guessing your product is new -- the first couple of times you heat the elements, they're going to cook-off any chemicals that might have been on the plates as part of the manufacturing process. This may include any non-stick chemicals that might be bonded to the surface.

I personally try to avoid non-stick products as I'm leery of the Teflon/fluorine in the product, but I'm told I'm a little paranoid about things like that - - you have to use your own judgement.

If this smell persists after the first several uses, I'd contact the manufacturer's customer service people.
