Cannot unlock memory card for my Canon Powershot S5IS

I somehow accidentally 'locked' my SD memory card and cannot figure out how to unlock it. I have read the manual but it does not seem to answer the question--any suggestions? Thank you!

thank you so much. I had no idea that the memory card had a switch on it. I must have locked it by accident. I have not used my camera in months. "THANKS"

I have a Canon A650 that was displaying a "card locked!" message. First, of course, check the lock tab on the card itself. Then, try a different SD card in the same camera. I tried an old 256 MB card from an older camera. I still got the "card locked" message. When I put the 1 GB card I was struggling with in my old Nikon, it read fine. So at this point I knew it was my camera and not the card. What finally worked was very gently pressing down on the metal flap inside the card chamber that detects the lock with the tip of a straightened paperclip. When I turned the camera on again the problem was gone. Hope this helps.

Card lock for powershot S5IS

Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Card is locked

There is a tiny switch on the memory card that is used to lock to prevent accidental erasure. Make sure that this small lever on the side of the SD card is pushed to unlock.

Cannon s5is powershot as soon as i turn camera on a memory card error comes up and theres no card in it, does same thing when card inserted. it's got to be something in the camera slot, is there a lock in...

On the SD card there is a little switch you can move. It has 2 positions, LOCKED, and UNLOCKED. To make the card available, put the switch in the UNLOCKED position.
Here is an example-

If that doesn't work, try putting the card into a memory card reader, like on your PC or a special USB attachment. If the memory card is recognized, then it might be a problem with your camera.

Canon powershot s5is isn't connecting to computer

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

Canon a590 Card (not really) Locked

Remove the SD card from the camera. Slide the tiny switch on the side of the card to its other "unlocked" position. Reinsert the card in the camera. But if you've already tried this, see this link for additional things that you can try.

Camera won't read memory card!

Hi there and welcome to FixYa. There could be a couple of things off the top of my head that could be giving you the problem, so we'll try solutions for them both.

A) Go into the menu of your camera and format your cards. Your camera won't save pictures to a card properly if you don't format it first. - Go into the Setup menu for this. And remember, you have to format the cards in the camera, don't use your pc or a card reader.
B) The above will take care of your problem unless.... your cards are locked. SD cards have a switch on the side of them so you can lock the card (it prevents accidental erasure). In that case, unlock it with the switch on the side. Let me know with a comment if you have any questions or problems, or if either of these solutions doesn't do the trick.

No memory card.

I have the same problem with my Canon G9. I have found a solution and since doing it the problem has only happened once again. Here is the solution: I have a 32mb sd card that was given with the camera when I bought it. This card has different connectors than the ones that are used on the usual SD cards. As soon as this card is inserted the camera works properly and all other cards work fine after. I'm assuming that the sd card circuit blocks and this 32mb card unblocks it somehow... Hope this will help you.
