Question about Sanyo VWM-950 VHS VCR

1 Answer

VWM-950 My VCR will tape, but when I play the tape back, the picture flips up (like rolling) really fast. (On a TV, you would play with the vertical button to set it correctly.) If I press the fast forward, the picture is clear. The sound is okay; just can't see the picture. When I play the tape on another VCR, I can see the picture, but the sound has a "grinding" type noise. Help, please! I need my VCR. Thank you!

Re: VWM-950

I suggest you get the Tape path cleaned up. Could be dirty video heads or a dirty Control Head. Use a good 'wet' type cleaning cassette.

My VCR will not record but I can play tapes on it. how come?

The simplest explanation is that you are using a video tape that has it's protect tab removed. Covering the slot with tape will solve that. However if the tab is there, it might be that the switch inside it pushes on is bent or broken.

SANYO VCR VWM-900 playback is jerky

Your post/description indicates that possibly the brake mechanism of the supply reel is acting up. A typical VCR has 2 reels inside that spins the tape. The left side is the supply while the right is the take up. If the brake (on the left/supply) is engaged (even partially), then the entire mechanism would have a hard time pulling the tape around the video/audio head and would partially be stretching. This would represent itself as jerky audio/video in most instances. There would possible also be a low screeching sound coming from the machine/tape. An indicator would be stretched tape - there would be uneven edges of the tape.

Since this is an electro-mechanical problem, perhaps your best course of action is to seek the services of a qualified video machine technician.

Alternately, it may be possible to loosen things up by first fast forwarding the entire tape and thereafter rewinding fully before you play it.

Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things worked out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

This model is the W528 VCR, but my manual includes both models

Does it do this with other television sets? If so, then it indicates the problem resides in the VCR. Rolling as you describe suggests either the VCR isn't producing a clean enough vertical sync pulse in the video signal, or the TV circuitry isn't processing the pulse properly. First, try cleaning the heads (not just the video head, but also the audio/control head which is to the right of the rotating video head. If this doesn't fix the problem, an electronic problem is likely. Unless this is a high dollar unit, repair is not recommended, as VCRs of the last 10 years or so are essentially disposable. I've done some looking on the 'net regarding copy protection, and it doesn't look like this is an issue here.
