Question about Car Speakers & Subwoofers

1 Answer

Put in new front speaker in car and they worked good for a couple of hours, now there is no sound from the front or back speakers. I unhooked the front speakers and put one back then rear speakers worked but sound really bad and the one speaker in front has nothing but static.

Is the radio factory, or aftermarket?

Are the speakers OEM replacements, or Aftermarket?

    What car is this in?

If it is factory, Is there "Premium Sound" installed?

Hello. Sounds like the amplifier is damaged and or could be a short from a front speaker wire to the car chassie ground. Assuming that the four speakers are driven by the same deck. I would first varify that the amplifier in the deck (radio, CD, etc) is functioning properly if it is being used.

A lot of companies are using 2 ohm speakers for stock speakers. This means they are more efficient (sounds strange that a stock speaker is efficient). The stock amp may not be able to put enough power out for these to sound good. You may end up needing a new system.

The fade button isnt turning on the speakers in the bakc of the wagon. we just bought the car but have no owners manual. front speakers are good

They could be unhooked. If they were hooked up but blown, you would here static. If you hear nothing theyre either unhooked or the radio console is messed up.

When you put fader to rear theres no sound its a sony 6stack cd player sony6000

Check to make sure your wires are hooked up right. A good way to check your wires is to pull the cd player out. unhook - and + to right rear speaker. Touch the - and + to corresponding ends of a AA battery. Have someone in the trunk to see if the speaker moves. If it doesn't, replace your wire going back or maybe a bad speaker. if it does move and you hook it back to the cd player right, and there is still no sound...it is the cd player. Best of luck to you!

unfortunately that's going to be a labor intensive project. You will have to follow the wires to where they go and make sure that they are all tight.

Being that the sub stays on you know you are looking for a loose wire off the other amplifier or the head unit depending on how you are powering those speakers.

if you have two amps one for the subs and one for the mains its probably not the power or ground going to them since both are not shutting down but check where the power splits to each amp.

start at the amp that isn't working unhook the cables. Test that those cables have power and proper ground then make sure they go back on cleanly (no loose strands) and tightly. proceed to follow the power wires to where they are connected.and double check everything.

If you have access to a continuity and voltage tester that will make it a bit simpler.

Depending on how clean an install it is (no panels, speaker boxes amps or seats to remove) it shouldn't take more than an hour or so. I always recommend that connections to power blocks remain easily accessible as I have had to remove amps, subs and junk like neon to get at wiring and its always a nightmare.

hope that helps

I have a BMW 318i 1993 and when i got it there was a big speaker and amp hooked up. I unhooked it but now i cant get any sound....the radio lites up but no sound. i know speakers work cuz they worked...

Hello pinkpimpin20,

Without knowing exactly what modifications were made to the factory sound system, it's difficult to point you to a particular fix. The number of channels on the "big amp" that you disconnected would help. Even the make and model.

But, from your description it's possible that the previous owner installed a multichannel amp to drive both the "extra bass speaker", usually referred to as a subwoofer, and the original vehicle speakers. In that case, the speaker wiring from the head unit (receiver) was cut and the receiver side of the wires was rerouted to the input of the aftermarket amp. The output of the amp was then connected to the other ends of the speaker wiring.

To restore to the original, you need to pull the stock receiver and resplice the wiring. If the previous owner cut the plug completely, it may be necessary to purchase a replacement from your BMW dealers service or parts department. It's possible, but not likely that the previous owner used both an aftermarket "harness" and an aftermarket "reverse harness" to avoid having to cut the wiring. In that case, all you'd have to do would be remove them and plug the radio harness back into the vehicle harness (or the back of the radio). But most DIY audio enthusists don't mind butchering the vehicle wiring. And you'll probably find that electrical tape was used to secure the wiring. After a year or so under the dash, it'll be a sticky mess to unravel.

The speaker wiring colors for the '93 318i are as follows:

Left Front Speaker Wire (+): Yellow/Red
Left Front Speaker Wire (-): Brown/Orange
Right Front Speaker Wire (+): Black/Red
Right Front Speaker Wire (-): Brown/Orange
Left Rear Speaker Wire (+): Yellow/Black
Left Rear Speaker Wire (-): Black/Orange
Right Rear Speaker Wire (+): Blue/Black
Right Rear Speaker Wire (-): Brown/Orange

Hope this helps.

Hello i just recently bought alpine speakers for my eclipse 2003

mostly because the subs in the back are probley using more amps than the ones in the front in the front should be used mostly for vocals and your bass in the trun so maybe trying to unhook the ones in the front from the sub and just leave then hooked up to the cd player where you can hear the vocals really good and leave your subs in the back hooked up to the amp

Replacing factory speakers in a 2-door 97 Cavalier

Just make sure they are the same size as your stock speakers and they should just fit right in no customizing needed. For a 1997 Cavalier it's 4X6 in the front and 6X9 in the rear. Shouldn't be too hard just a couple screws and hooking up the existing wire to your new speakers.
