Question about Coleman Propane Forced Air Heater w/Electronic Ignition (50,000-80,000 BTU)

Short cycling..continually..minimal heat

Furnace keeps short cycling for hours...house does not get warm..some warm air coming thru vents..thermostat new...clean filter...

Is this furnace standing pilot or electronic? if standing pilot turn power off then take t-stat off wall and connect the wires labeled r and c together and see if that keeps furnace working. If electronic check flame sensor you can check flame sensor buy cleaning with steel wool. if that doesn't work then try t-sat.

where is the thermostat located? i should be on a inside wall in a comon room and not around lights, computer or heat vent or air return. a thermostat is just a switch and will operate in its enviroment. does the fan cycle off before the heat starts blowing again? the fan on these are on a timer that the t stat will have to "brake" open on reaching temp to shut off. not knowing where your at look this over and i hope it helps. i dont think i would let someone sell me a control board for this problem.

I have a DV-55 direct vent... Blower kicks on for about 30 sec after it lights then goes of and continues to cycle this way then finally stays on

That is normal...especially if the air is pretty cool when it starts... the air cools the heat exchanger too much and it cycles till everything gets warm... nothing to worry about.. :-)

Could be. But you should try changing the lower limit of the bi-metal thermostat switch located in the plenum for the induced (house) air. It could be that the plenum gets cooled off by the fan (too much air). The propane has lower BTU values than the gas the furnace was originally designed for. Because of this, the induced air plenum will warm,, the fan will turn on, but then the plenum goes below the low temp because the gas cannot maintain temp because of lower BTU values (or for some other reason), and the furnace "thinks" that it has done its job heating the house for a cycle. After shutting off, it is then rudely notified by a complaining wall thermostat that some more work must be done pronto. That is why it cycles. Good luck.

hook up the blue wire in the furnace cabinet where the blower section and the other thermostat wires are connected to the furnace. the thermostat you have uses a common wire from the thermostat to the furnace and this needs to be hooked up in the furnace otherwise you will have the problem you are having.

Flip the lower panel over and look for a wiring diagram. On that diagram there will be a diagnostic chart. Let me know what 5 blinks represent. Then I want you to read on.

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

Gas heater doesn't stay on longer than 5 minutes.


It sounds to me that your air flow is restricted somewhere. The first thing to check is your air filter. If that gets real dirty your restricted air flow will cause the hi-limit(hi temperature limit switch) in your heat exchanger compartment to over heat and open up your gas valve electrical circuit,thus, shutting off the gas to your burners. After the hi-limit switch cools down the furnace will go back to heating again then it will overheat again(you get the picture?) If it keeps cycling on and off like that the house will never get warm if it is cold outside. If your air filter is reasonably clean(you should be able to see light thru it easily) then the secondary heat exchanger could also be dirty, this is located above the indoor fan housing, you would need to pull the indoor blower assembly out of the furnace and look up above. The secondary heat exchanger looks similar to a radiator will fins. You can use a medium stiff plastic brush to brush the dirt,hair, whatever off of it. Another problem spot would be the cooling evaporator coil (if you have central airconditioning) located most likely above the furnace in the plenum(if your furnace is in a basement). This usually is difficult to access if an access cover wasn't installed when the airconditioning was installed. I would recommend an experience service tech to clean it for you. Also make sure all you supply air registers and return air registers are open . These are the things I would check first. Good luck!!

have you changed t-stat? if so you need to increase the heat anticipator. if you have a fan limit switch, the setting may need adjusting. Thay will change with age

sounds like the flame sensor needs to be replace. You can try cleaning it with steel wool. This will get you by for a little while.

I am confident the technician(s) have done this but check anyway.
Gas pressure 4-7 inches W.C for natural, 10 - 11 for Propane.
Air filter clean and unrestricted.
Temperature over supply plenum 140 degrees F.
All registers open and unrestricted.
Vent and intake unrestricted and not blocked.
Condensate hoses free of debris and draining.

OK now lets check to see if the furnace is staying on long enough.When it runs for a heat cycle, is the flame staying on until about 2 minutes prior to achieving the set temperature or is it cycling everyfew seconds and never reaching temp? To check you will need to view the flame through a small viewing port of thru the fins in the front door. Watch them for 10 to 15 minutes.

If they are staying on a long time, we will need to see if the room blower is working properly. If they are going out quickly and or cycling. Get the technician on the pone to talk it over. It could be a safety sensor.

If the blower stays on and the burners are on as well, you have a door open somewhere. Just kidding. Remove the thermostst documenting which wires go where. Take the white wire and cross it with the red wire. This will (or should) turn on the furnace. Clamp them together untill the either the house gets warm or you are confident it is not going to reach temperature. If it did get close to the temperature you wanted, it is a thermostat issue. If not, you got me!

And they say we have an easy job! Get beck to us with your results.

OK, we will need to perform a simple test of the furnace to see exactly what is going on. Set your thermostat to 10 degrees higher than you normally do so we know that there is a call for heat. Then at the furnace, there will ba a small viewing port. Watch the blinking light and record all the patterns it blinks. After a minute or so, place your hand on the PVC vent pipe(s) to see if they are warm. If not, either the thermostat is not sending a signal to the furnace or we will need to look inside the furnace to see what is happening. But if one of the PVC pipes is getting warm, place your hand on the plenum on top of the furnace connected to the ductwork. You shoul feel the metal starting to get warm. If the blower does not turn on within two minutes, there is an issue with either the blower itself or the control board.

Getting back to if one of the vent pipe(s) don't get warm. Using a piece of duct tape or electrical tape, after removing the furnace access panel, tape the door safety switch down. The furnace will now try and cycle. A small fan attached to the vent pipe should run, then it will create suction on a pressure switch that will energize the ignitor. You will notice an orange glow thru a larger viewing port looking into the burner box. After a few seconds, the gas valve will open and the ignitor will ignite the gas. The orange glow will turn to a blue flame. Now after two minutes or less, the blower should turn on. If one of these steps don't happen, you should document it and let your technician know. As far as the blinking lights, these are diagnostic codes that will tell you where to look for the issue. On the rerverse of the access panel, there is a chart that gives a simple explanation of what the blinking represents. Again, let your technician know what you discovered. Keep in mind that the furnace will cycle or attempt to start 3 times before it will blink an error code.

Remove the tape and reassemble the access panel. Yes you will need to contact your technician but the steps you performed just saved you 30-40 minutes of diagnostic time.
