You will need a refrigerant recovery machine, and an EPA certification to recover refrigerant. You will need an oxy-acetylene brazing set-up as well as a nitrogen tank and regulator set-up. You will need a set of refrigerant guages (make sure to get guages for the r-22 you will be removing and another set for the new r-410a going into the heat pump), a digital micron guage and a vacuum pump.
You may want a digital multimeter and control and power wiring supplies. You will probably need additional refrigerant also.
It may not be a good DIY project.

Just had a new house built and its all electric. Has a Tempstar heat pump. There are two model numbers involved: FSM4X4800A1 (attic unit) and N4H348AKE100 (outside unit). This is a 4 ton unit and I...

It's entry level with regard to efficiency. At the same time, it's not a bad piece of equipment. Made by Carrier ICP. I've installed many of these. I suspect since you had your house foamed, it's probably not costing you a heck of alot to heat or cool- so it would be hard to justify changing it just to add seer points. It would be difficult to get a pay-back on your investment. I say roll with it and enjoy your new home!

Where is the filter located?

Hi, if this is a central system that is split up with the condenser outdoors and the air handler indoors it can be in the indoor unit it self or also it may be in the ceiling or wall near the unit behind a grill for the return air to flow back. Walk around and look for this grill. It is either up high near the air handler close to it, or low on a wall near it. If not out in the home, you will find it in the indoor unit only, nothing outdoors. If you remove a panel you should find it. Please keep me posted and please don't forget to rate me as I no you will be kind. I will check in on you a little later to see if you have found it.

There is water leaking from the bottom of the new gas furnace. This happend last year and they said a hose was plugged. It is happening again this year and they are saying now it is because we didn't have...

No. The installers did not properly plumb you hose. You have a high efficient furnace which is really nice. However, this furnace takes out moister from the air when heating, causing condensation. I would look at the installation manual and see if they installed them properly. They might of installed the wrong unit for you home. Most Goodman furnaces can only be installed up-flow meaning in the closet or horizontal installed meaning in the attic. Look at the installation manual to see if they installed the right unit for your home. www.fastacservice.com

Goodman heats but defrosts turns on before desired temp.

Yes. The defrost cycle of a heat pump is actually turning on your airconditioning to heat up the condenser to thaw it out. During this cycle your electric strip heaters "should" be adequate enough to compensate for the a/c being on. At about 30 - 34 degrees outdoor temp there is not enough heat in the air to to adequately heat your home with the heat pump only. Some technitions will use an outdoor thermostat to turn off the heat pump when it is under 34 degrees outside. If you are to cold when its under 34 degrees intall more electric strip heaters.. But if you do this your electric bill may go up significantly.
Welcome to the wonderful world of electric heat pumps (lol).
Good luck.
