Yes the washer does spin on the spin cycle. It acts up only when the waser fills and goes to the agitate or wash cycle

I have the same exact problem. I have the front panel off and have run the machine thru the various cycles. All systems work perfectly, motor, pump, belt drive, spin cycle, everything. When it is supposed to go into the aggitation mode, the motor turns the large pulley under the transmission, but no agitation. I think I will try the controller replacement if I can find one locally.

Does that washer spin? Are you having the problem across all cycles, or is it only on certain ones?

I'm experiencing the exact same issue with mine.

Can you hear the motor running during the agitation? If the motor is running, but the agitator isn't working, then that would point to something like the transmission, or some sort of obstruction that is preventing the agitator from working properly.

If the motor isn't running, then try running through different cycles. If it operates properly on one cycle, but not others, then I would tend to think that it's in the controller. If not, then it's likely in the motor. I also have seen a post somewhere instructing to check the vacuum connection to the water level control, as well. NOt sure how that plays into the equation, but it's easy enough to do & doesn't cost anything to try.

FYI: I just spent $10 for one of the "experts" here to tell me that the issue was "absolutely" in my motor. After spending $220 to replace a motor that I cannot return now since it's been installed, I find out that my original assessment is probably correct & my problem is in the controller.

If it comes down to a toss-up between the two, go with the cheapest first (likely the controller).

Hope this helps.

    FYI...

Today, I just replaced the controller in the machine & it now works wonderfully.

Additionally, I would recommend checking out RepairClinic.com for your parts needs. I've used them several times & have found them to be prompt and very reasonably priced.

GE Profile WPRE6100G Top Load Washer My washer is 2 yrs old and has started to make a loud metalic banging noise during the wash cycle. It does not during the spin cycle. Doesn't seem to matter whether...

Hi!!
The "Metallic banging/clicking" sound you hear is the Shifter mechanism engaging or disengaging.
The drive system will engage at the start of the Agitate Cycle and disengage when the Agitate Cycle is complete. This occurs multiple times during the wash. GE claims this is a normal sound and should not be concerned about it. Check page 10 of your Operating Manual, if you do not have a manual, click on this link to download one http://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=49-90323.PDF

Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

Agitator will not work spin does

can you hear it trying or does it try with a grating sound, most of these have a plastic drive coupler underneath the agitator and this or the thrust bearing could be your issue, you need to remove the agitator parts first(and run a wash cycle without any clothes in the washer) and see if this is the problem,as with the agitator off the stem(both inner and outer) should run when held by hand during any cycles and there should be resistance as in no slipping during holding by hand, then if you still have problems then its further below this area

Agitator is loose

Does the plastic cap unscrew (CCW)? If you get it off, there is a plastic block attached to the top of the shaft that should just pull off. Check it for cracking or splines that are torn out inside--replace it if damaged. Make sure the cap screws down tight.
