How do you find the white balance on this camera?


This camera does not have a customizable white balance. It does have some presets -- they are:

  • Auto (default)-automatically corrects white
balance. Ideal for general picture taking.

  • Daylight-for pictures in natural lighting.
  • Tungsten-corrects the orange cast of household
light bulbs. Ideal for indoor pictures under tungsten or
halogen lighting without flash.

  • Fluorescent-corrects the green cast of fluorescent
lighting. Ideal for indoor pictures under fluorescent
lighting without flash.

To access them, press the [Menu] button and look for White Balance -- the icon is a Sun and Light Bulb symbol.

When I take a picture in p setting it comes out with a blue cast. When taken i automatic, it comes out in correct colors


You didn't specify the model of your camera so I can't be too precise here.
Since it does appear to be a white balance issue, I'd say you've got the white balance set too warm. The camera compensates by adding blue to the scene and hence you get the blue tint. Either set the white balance to match the scene, or else set it to "Auto".

My Canon G11 - most indoor pics have a strong yellow-orange hue. What can I do to correct this or is the camera broken?


Light from ordinary light bulbs has a strong yellow-orange cast, which our eyes tend to adjust for without thought. Check the white balance setting on your camera. This is to adjust the camera for the color of the light, to try to make white come out white, hence the name "white balance." Set the white balance to incandescent (light-bulb icon) for indoor shooting under light bulbs, or to automatic to let the camera take its best attempt.

Try experimenting with the white balance setting. Taking pictures in bright sunlight with the incandescent setting will give your pictures a very blue cast, making things look a little colder. There are other settings, such as flourescent.

When I scan a document to my computer it comes with blue background


This is usually caused by the white balance being on manual instead of automatic. You can correct it on the scanning applet control panel (varies depending on your driver OS and version), or after acquisition in whatever program you use to manipulate the image.

Also (rarer) it could be caused by a yellowing of the automatic white balance calibration strip which is under the glass, near the scanning head homing position.

if i'm not mistaking on the year look on drivers side, right above harmonic balancer close next to engine... it will be a little round sensor... hope this is correct on the year....

Unsteady White balance


You must switch to preset, push the awb button on the front to switch from auto white balance indoor to auto white balance sunlight (3200k to 5600k). This will automatically balance the camera to the approximate settings needed. For fine tuning the white balance.....
If you want to set the A and B buttons, first switch to A, then hit the Auto button by the user 1,2 3 button until you are off of auto total white auto focus auto iris mode AWB A ch will show in the viewer hit the Auto again and ATW shows, meaning Auto total white is on, and you will not have control over the white balance, it will continue to float and try to automatically balance in the middle of your footage. Once you are on AWB A ch from hitting the AUTO button, then point the camera at the white you are balancing to (of course put the white under the lighting you want to balance to) push the AWB button on the front of the camera and hold it in until the camera goes through the white balance mode and the black balance mode,...the camera will go dark while this is being done but an OK with the correct color temperature will show briefly on the screen when it is done and you can release the AWB button. Now you have set the A button to the white balance for the current lighting.
If you are going to be switching between indoor and outdoor, do the same for the B button above and set it's white balance to the exterior light color temp. that way you can just switch between A and B when you are moving fast between interior and exterior shots and have the correct color temp.
You could always leave the switch on preset, and hit the AWB button on the front to switch from 3200 to 5600, but remember not all light is either 3200 or 5600, that is why we use the A and B settings and get the White balance for the exact color temp of the space being shot in.

White Balance and Coloring The White Balance feature on Canon digital cameras and camcorders is set to "Auto White Balance" at the time of purchase. What is the difference between “Auto” and “TTL” in the flash setting?


Standard TTL can be used with any type of Nikkor lens. In standard D-TTL flash, automatic flash output level compensation is not available. This means that even though the main subject is correctly exposed, the background may not be. Standard D-TTL flash is useful when you want to highlight the main subject or perform flash exposure compensation. D-3D Multi sensor balanced fill-flash together with D-multi sensor balanced fill flash is called Automatic Balanced Fill flash with TTL multi sensor. What this does is it performs a balanced metering that uses multi pattern photometering information to provide a balance between the main subject and the background light. The difference between the D-3D multi sensor and the D-multi sensor is that one is used with D or G type lenses (D-3D) and the other is used with non-D or G type lenses.
