Question about Garmin GPS III

Broken screen on Garmin GPS III

I got a Garmin GPS III from a friend after it got damaged with rain. It was still working but the screen had a couple of missing lines on it. Now the screen went out completely. I would like to pick up another damaged unit to pull the screen out of and fix this one. Perhaps one where the antenna does not work or some problem not related to the screen.

If anyone has one of these old receivers that they would be willing to part with let me know. Thanks.

A couple of ideas, craigslist, ebay, or a Garmin Dealer. They can actually purchase discontinued GPS for a considerably lower price.

Good Luck!

GPS60 screen fades out cannot see. Contrast setting and changing batteries has no effect.

The solution to your problem is to avoid Garmin. Sorry, but that\'s the truth. My GPS 60 has the same problem. My rocker switch does not change the contrast setting. Nothing helps. This GPS is garbage - I can\'t even read it in low-level room light, let alone outdoors. I already bought a Nuvi car GPS by Garmin and nobody will steal it even though I leave my door unlocked! That tells you something about Garmin. My Dad bought me this hand-held (probably got it at a flea market), so now I have two pieces of garbage. I have owned GPS\'s by other companies, and Garmin sucks. Problem is, people with NO clue about GPS functionality and user-friendliness "like" Garmin because it is one of the few if only GPS products they\'ve ever tried. I even once heard some old folks in a diner telling their friends how terribly their GPS worked. It gave them poor route selection, poor interactive menus, and the maps were wrong. Then, after all that, they say they highly recommend their suckticular* product because a GPS can be so helpful at times. Never mind that other people make GPS units and they could be better, this couple recommends the one they just lambasted. At the end of the conversation, the friends asked who made it. The couple said, "Garmin" That is the level of stupidity of the consumer. A product can ****, but the consumer will recommend it just so they can sound knowledgeable or useful.

Bad white lines on the Garmin gps III Plus display..... how we can repair it?

It sounds like you have a problem with the screen itself. Garmin at http://www.garmin.com has an excellent repair program. They repair your out of warrant GPS for a flat fixed rate. The GPS is like new when you get it back. Just to to the Garmn web site click on the support tab and follow the menu selections from there.

It sounds like the ribbon cable that connects the screen to the controller might be seated incorrectly. I would check that.

Try leaving it on for a few days on cig lighter with unit ON. gps III plus has a rechargeable valadium battery soldered to the board on the inside of the unit to hold memory of your waypoints. You can solder a new one in for about 5 buks-it may need a new one but try charging it first

I have one that has a broken screen. I would buy your unit for $20, or possibly sell you mine for around the same.

Garmin V

I think I may have found the solution.

A reply for a post on another site:

I visited the Garmin Corp office to seek help with that problem. If the shut down occurs right after satellite acquisition and the screen may show just a narrow black line going across it, it is likely due to some program changes the sattelite folks did without telling the software programmers. Garmin web site has a free download fix for the problem. Another option is to go into your settings and turn off the WAAS. Hope this helps. Go to the web site, check downloads, find your model gps and there you go. Good luck.

I disabled WAAS and so far so good.

I couldn't find the fix on the Garmin site.

HTH.

Garmin GPS III LCD screen problem

I have a GPSII+ that has a screen problem. Several of the x and y coordinates have failed and I think it is due to condensation in the unit due to hot day temps then cold nights. If I open it and dry out the unit for a while... the display will be better but will not return to full display. Some of the X and Y lines don't work.
