Question about Whirlpool GS460 Gas Kitchen Range

1 Answer

I have a whirlpool gas range. When I try to use the oven it counts down and the pilot looks like it starts to heat up. Sometimes it will work and heat and other times it does not. The unit is about 6 years old.

This dude is a plain jane gas stove with standing pilot and glow bar. The most frequent probo with these is the oven won't light. You can see the oven glow bar coming on but no fire. Easy fix.If it looks real dim orange the ignitor is weak and not pulling enough current through the safety valve to open the gas flow. Sometimes you can bump the stove and make it come on. Here is how it works:

I have a Garland Sunfire 36 inch gas Range. oven does not come on again after reaching temp.

You probably have a bad thermocouple. Try cleaning it off with sand paper. It's the part that the pilot light is igniting.

My oven is ten yrs old lately when i push bake then start the timer starts counting backwards and the pilot light comes on but the oven does not get hot. sometimes i can slam the door and it will start...

Sounds to me like your oven is a gas oven that uses silicone carbide ignition. When that ignitor gets aged it gets weak and will not open the safety valve. How it works video:

When you bang on the oven the bimetal will open on a weak ignitor. If yours is dim orange that is another sign of a weak ignitor.

Oven does not work: pilot light out? How feasible (how dangerous) to try to relight pilot light? T Phillips Winston-Salem, NC

Actually, your oven probably doesn't have a pilot light at all. In order to ignite the oven, it has an oven igniter. If you open the broiler, look up on the "ceiling" of the broiler to the back of the burner. There, you'll see a white block. That is the igniter. What it's supposed to do is heat up (electrically) and when it heats up enough, the gas valve turns on and the oven lights. What happens with these, is that the heating element on it opens from years of use and must be replaced. Inside the broiler door (usually) is the stove's model and serial numbers. Write them down and visit your local appliance parts store with those numbers and they'll give you a new one. (Usually around $30-$45 or so.) Also, you can usually change the igniter from inside the oven by removing the bottom drip plate, so that'll save your back a lot of straining. :)

I hope this helps and hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

Older whirlpool gas oven pilot lights but oven will not ignite

your oven most likely has a safety shutoff valve
with a thermostat that has to be heated by the
pilot flame,(this ensures that the pilot is lit) before gas is sent to the oven burners. this unit mounted in the bottom of the range and is
connected to the gas line.

Oven gas turns off

If your Wolf has pilot light, most cases dirty pilot light (flame looks yellow, normal flame looks blue), you have to disassemble the pilot light to clean it, thermocouple connection is loose, bad thermocouple or bad oven safety valve. you can try change the thermocouple first, if it did not solve the problem, then it will be bad oven safety valve. You can buy thermocouple thru Hardware store. Have fun.
