Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

2 Answers

The backup utility does not seem to work properly. I have a 40Gig drive and the backup function works as normal, but when I go to restore it says no backup data. I checked on my PC and there are five files in the backup folder (using a usb 16G stick for backup). I know the files are there, it writes to the memory stick just fine, the memory stick shows up when I plug it in but says there is no backup data. This happens right from the backup and then restore menu, no reset of the ps3 is required.

I should add that it seems the files the backup utility put onto the thumbdrive are larger than 4GB. At least one file is anyway.

In my case the problem was that the USB device did not re-mount after the PS3 restarted.

Try starting the backup restore process, removing the USB device sometime after the PS3 starts formatting, then re-attaching it once the PS3 finishes restarting. Wait for a while to allow the device to mount before you press the PS button.

Tried a different usb stick and for some reason the PS3 wrote the files in a way that it could understand itself if that makes sense. I mean the folder with the backup files was always there but for some reason the PS3 could not recognize its own folder. Trying to do this on a different memory stick allowed that to work properly for some reason.
PS3 does not support all usb sticks for some reason??

Ps3 system restore

The restore function is located within the settings tab in the xmb, which is second tab next to the users tab. Scroll down in the settings tab and you will find system settings. The restore ps3 option is near the bottom of the list, close to format hard drive and system information. I believe there is a backup data utility in there also, so you cam transfer any data you would like to save to a thumb drive before you restore, but I've never done a backup, so I'm not exactly sure what info can and cannot be backed up. Hope this helps!

HI, backup your games. If you're a playstation plus member you can back them up online. Otherwise, insert a usb drive, go across to "game" then up or down to "Saved data utility (ps3)". Then select the save you want to backup by pressing triangle. Select copy, choose your usb drive (or usb key) as the destination.
After you have backed up all the saves you want, go across to settings, then to system settings. then select "Restore default settings." Let it have its process, and turn off the PS3 then back on again.
You may need to set up your network settings again.
If it still doesn't work, follow steps above but select "Restore PS3 system" instead. This is when having the backed up game saves is needed as you will have to copy them back from the usb drive (or from online via playstaiton plus) onto your restored ps3.

I deleted users, is there any way to get them back?

If by users you mean the local PS3 accounts, they can be recovered only if you've backed them up previously. Just insert whatever media you backed your system up on (DVD, hard drive, flash drive, etc) and use the Backup Utility to restore it. The Backup Utility can be found if you navigate to XMB > Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility.

If by users you mean Playstation Network accounts, you can "re-link" a local PS3 account to a PSN account. Once you've made a local account and have logged into it, go to sign into the PSN and enter your PSN information. Select the option to remember the information and the accounts will be "linked."

If by users you mean PSN friends/buddies, you can just re-add them assuming you remember their PSN names.

Hope that helped!

Will no read any game disc but will read dvds

Unfortunately this same issue happened to me as well, and I had to send my PS3 in for repair. But maybe what I was told to do will work for you! Here's what I was told.

You're going to want to backup everything on your PS3. The Backup Utility can be found in the System Settings Menu on the Settings Menu on the XMB menu (XMB > Settings > System Settings). More info on how to backup your information can be found on the Playstation website, found here.

Next you'll want to restore your PS3 to it's default/factory settings. It's also found in the Settings Menu on the XMB, labelled "Restore Default Settings." Just follow the on-screen instructions.

Once it's restored, see if the problem is fixed. If it is, congrats! Just use the Backup Utility to restore all of your backed up data.

If not, either try the online Knowledge Center or send in your PS3 for repair (if it's under warranty, it's free!)

Hope it all works out! If you send in your PS3 you won't get it back for almost a month...

I have a 80 GB Playstation 3 and the memory has ran out. I purchased an HP external hard drive with 1 terabyte. I have formatted it with FAT32 and plugged it into my system, which recognized it. It copied...

When replacing a hard drive in a PS3, the easiest way to transfer your game data from one drive to another is to use a USB Flash drive. If you are only concerned with the save game data, you can plug it in while using the hard drive that has your save files, go to Game on the XMB, then Game Saves, and select the save data you wish to copy. Press triangle and select copy. This method doesn't work for all games though, because some games will "lock" your save data but there is a way around this.

Instead of manually copying your save files, you can backup your data to the flash drive under the Settings on the XMB, then go down to System Settings > Backup Utility. This will try to backup everything on your PS3, so it is best to have manually transferred as many of the other types of files (music, pictures, videos) off the first hard drive as possible. This means more space will be available for Game saves and Game Data. If you aren't too concerned with reinstalling game data on the new drive, i would suggest deleting these from the first hard drive as well, as they take up much more space and make the back-up process take considerably longer.

Once the Backup Utility finishes, you may swap in the new hard drive and restore the data from your flash drive. Restore is in the Backup Utility menu.

Ps3 3.01 update broke my disc drive

I had the same problem: Blue-Ray games/movies, normal dvds would not play after some time I did the 3.01 upgrade. To work around the problem I went into System Settings and did a system restore - quick format and viola everything was fine. Unfortunately I was not able to run the backup utility to save my game data - (kids not too happy about losing countless hours on Little Big Planet). So hopefully this helps someone - Funny thing is after the restore the version of software was still 3.01 (I thought it would do factory reset). So something got hosed somewhere in the settings or just general HD corruption.

Restoring files after using the Backup utility.

1. Plug in the USB drive that contains the data.
2. On the XMB go to Settings then System Settings
3. Go to Back Up Utility like before but
4. Choose Restore rather than Back Up
5. The PS3 does the rest

You can have the PS3 delete the data file from the USB drive by choosing Delete Backup Data.

Updating Problem

If you have game saves, etc backup the PS3 using the backup function, then perform a quick restore.

If you don't have any game saves, pics, etc you care about then go ahead and run the FULL Restore.

That will take care of the problem.

That's pretty much all you can do.

It's due to corrupted data on the hard drive.
